Laney Lionheart

Re: Laney Lionheart

As much as love laney, I think this amp is a bit of a marketing gimmick more than anything, I just dont know about a 5 watt Class A, what are you really gonna get?

Re: Laney Lionheart

You'd get quiet enough power amp distortion which IS what most people seem to want these days... With a PA you can also use the amp for medium size gigs and certainly for small gigs. I for one think it's a real good idea, I'd love a 5W amp. Actually I'd prefer a half watt one :D

Plenty in a recording studio, or in a home practice environment. I've heard some decent clips, but that's it sofar. Single-ended (one power tube) amps have a particular feel about them that larger amps don't possess.

Kudos to Laney for finally making an amp that doesn't look cheap. Apparently they're not too badly made, though early reports of them being completely handwired with boutique quality parts were wide of the mark.

I think they'll sell well (particularly in England) to players who are looking to get a bit of boutique feel and sound at a low price. But there's a bit of competition in the 'boutique-ish sound, built cheaper' market these days: Vox are doing great stuff, as are Genz Benz and even Crate.

Re: Laney Lionheart

I have a VC15 and it's very well built and has AMAZING tone. Very rich sounding, very versatile amplifier.

Re: Laney Lionheart

Laney's are so underrated it hurts!!! There VC 15's and 30's are freakin awesome. British tone with out the Price. i'm interested in one of these aswell!!

Re: Laney Lionheart

$1000 for a 5 watt combo? sounds pretty darn expensive. i like laneys and plan to purchase a 50 watt combo, but at that price for a 5 watt combo, i'd rather get a hiwatt or koch.

Re: Laney Lionheart

1,000 bucks? They're actually MORE expensive in the UK...They're made here for god's sake :S weird. You guys got it lucky EVEN on your imports it seems.

If it's even as good as a VC15 it's well worth it I say.

while you're possibly on the right track with preferring a Koch or Hiwatt at that price, the trick is to try and not correlate wattage with price. I know this is difficult as amps are traditionally more expensive as they get louder, but:

-the sound is the thing.

-and most important, usability. If you're a home or small studio player, or a pro that needs to keep studio or onstage volume down, then extra wattage becomes a hinderance.

Re: Laney Lionheart

Erm....Laney do not use cheap parts....
The last time I looked in one of the newer ones...did not find anything cheap.
Most boohhtrick is just more hype than realism....

Hmmm, the LC15 I peeked inside wasn't super cheap parts-wise, but I don't think Dan Boul or Fred Taccone would be especially happy if you made them make an amp from the same bits and pieces.

I totally agree that there is an awful lot of smoke and mirrors surrounding 'boutique' amps, but whenever I open up a truly killer amp, I tend to see pretty expensive parts, and not many of them. Where there's smoke...

But my original post was referring more to aesthetics than build in regards to cheapness. That and the early rumours that Laney had built a true handwired, point to point amp (which it turns out were untrue). Of course that doesn't mean the amp is going to sound bad...

or you can get an aor or vc series for half the price. You cant suggest that all laneys are expensive because of the price of one? I bought my VC100 combo for $500 Canadian(back when it was worthless) BRAND NEW! These lionhearts are brand new off the line and so theyre going o be more expensive. If you dont plan on using 5 watts then what does it matter how much this one costs?

i didn't suggest that laneys are expensive because of the price of one. i simply stated that i like laney, but if i were to drop a small fortune on a 5 watt amp, i'd rather go for a hiwatt or koch
