Last Sunday was Traynor amp tryout day!

This is from an ongoing series of private messages with GuitarStv about whether Traynor amps would be right for me:

I wanted to tell you about my Sunday trip to a store to try out the YCV20WR and YCV40WR. It was very interesting.

I tried out both amps this way:

Clean channel alone.
Dirty channel alone.
MI Audio Crunch box into both channels.
Analogman SD/808/Silver into both channels.
My Boss GT-8 into the effects return, to play it through the power amp only.

My guitar was a 89 Am Std Strat, maple board, Bill Lawrence L-500L bridge and L-465 neck.

I had tried out the 20WR and the 50Blue previously at another store. The 20 is a good amp. But it just does not make me happy. I have never been a fan of the EL84 "chime," really. All my sampling before and this weekend through this amp did not excite me. While it is a good little amp, it didn't thrill me.

At my previous test, the YCV 50Blue gives a great marshall dirty tone in its dirty channel. The GT-8 through the effects return of the 50Blue was really superb. The clean channel, owever, was fairly dark, and didn't really thrill me.

My favorite was the YCV40WR. Both pedals, sounded good, but especially the analogman/808/silver! I've never heard that pedal sound so good. I was thinking of selling it. Now, NO WAY!

The clean channel alone was really great, too.
Fendery bright cleans, shimmer and lots of crisp high end.

Dirty channel was good, especially with the crunch box.

What really surprised me was the GT-8 through the effects return. That GT-8 came alive! Brighter than the real amp models would be, but still really alive. When I played my pro-reverb amp model on the GT8 and hit the "warm" OD, it was amazing! Really a great sound. Better than through my Atomic, which has EL84's.

Most people who love the atomic play through a POD. I am thinking of picking up a YCV 40. Fender cleans, loves pedals, and my 8 through the back just rocked! I can use that happily a number of ways.....

Of course, it may just be the Vintage 30 that makes it so awesome.... I tried my Peavey Classic 30 through a Legacy 1 x 12 with a V30, and that amp came alive, too!

I think I may post this for everybody's edification.

Re: Last Sunday was Traynor amp tryout day!

I always said Traynor YVC40 is the best amp ever made .... except for bassman.

Re: Last Sunday was Traynor amp tryout day!

My experiences trying out the Traynor combos match yours pretty closely. I loved the Fender-y clean on the 40WR, but found the dirty channel to be kind of farty at higher gain. Conversely, I LOVED the dirty channel on the 50BLUE, but I wasn't as thrilled by the cleans (though the clean channel on the 50BLUE is quite nice if you EQ it right).

Ideally I would have one of each and run them in stereo. I'd use my PodXT as a multifx and have the preamp from one of them feed both poweramps. Which preamp is working would be selected by an A/B switch.

i have been thinking of grabbing a Traynor as well... i like the idea of the little wine red ones with a Green Back but i don't think they would have enough power and bottom end... I've seen a few Blue ones... a 15 watt model and a 50 watt model... not sure about them yet. I have not really tried them out that well... interesting amps for under $800canadian

Glad you guys agree....

Yeah, the 50 blue dirty was the read deal. Too bad you can't do both.... Well, unless you buy a Rivera.:smack:

I'm getting rid of the YCS-100. Neat, but too modern and too aggressive. Not my cup of tea anymore.

Yes, as I advance in age :headache: , I find myself appreciating vintage tones more.

But I think a Rat through a Pro Reverb is vintage :D

Re: Last Sunday was Traynor amp tryout day!

So I went and tried out the same test through a Traynor YCV40 - without the Wine Red tolex and having a Celestion 70/80 speaker instead of a V30. Nice tone, but much flatter. I really preferred the vintage 30 there instead. Tried the same tests, and the tone and sound were not nearly as "alive". Guess I am a vintage 30 kind of guy.

Re: Last Sunday was Traynor amp tryout day!

I really enjoy my Traynor YCV50 Blue. I can coax some damn good overdrive tones out of it. The cleans could use some work.. but they are fine for me. Dark enough for jazz.

Yeah, the overdrive tones from that are just great for sure.

If you get them with the extension cab it really helps the lower end quite a bit.
