lead 12 combo - extension cab mod

Just a quick note I had my Marshall lead 12 combo modded. I won't see my amp dude for awhile, wanted to use him one last time - great work at great prices, and a cool guy to boot.

I just wanted a jack put on the back that the internal speaker would plug into, or that could be removed for an extension cab.

He ended up putting in a jack that when you plug in an extension cab it automatically bypasses the internal speaker - radness! (the amp wouldn't be able to handle the load of its own speaker and an 8 ohm cab)

[pic pending - technical difficulties, hehe]

Sounded pretty cool through my Boogie 1 x 12". Probably an easy mod for many on the board, but when it comes to amps & high voltage, I leave it to the pros.

I don't know what it is about this amp - I keep coming back to it and dig what it delivers.

LOL... just noticed this thread. I don't come here as often as I used to.

Anyways... I installed a 1/4" jack in my Lead 12 last year and love it as well. In fact, it was sitting up at my band's rehearsal space for months because I just used that little amp, running into a Bogner OS2X12 for practice and it was able to keep up with the [loud] band easily. Sounds great too! Granted... there's NO clean headroom. But if you're going for Marshall tones, the little SS amp does an awesome job of it. :approve:

cool man! yeah, no cleans. and with a pedal it gets a bit noisy as you crank, but that's how my 800 was too - needed a noise gate. I like that point as you turn up from about 8 to max volume, where it's like "ah, there's the inner beast wanting to come out!"

I A-B'ed the stock 10" and the 12" the other day and it was like day and night! The 10" sounded really small/boxy/shrill in comparison - doubt I'll ever use the stock again unless I really have to. Wish I had done it sooner, but you live and learn.

Yeah... my son is using the Lead 12 as his practice amp now and uses the 10" speaker. But I'll always used a closed-back cab with at least one 12" speaker whenever I used it for sure. Little amp can sound pretty big with the right cab.

I had one of those. What I did was cut the speaker wire. On the amp side I put a 1/4" jack and the speaker side I put the plug. No drilling in to the chasis. I would run it through the 4x12 I had at the time and it sounded great. Kept up in a band setting too. Those are cool little amps.
