Led Zeppelin

Re: Led Zeppelin

A little off topic & I really don't mean to flame a "classic", but I recently bought a Jeff Beck Greatest Hits disc, because aside from "People Get Ready" & a copy of an acoustic version of "Greensleeves", I couldn't tell you anything he played......I just don't get it; there was nothing on the disc that did anything for me.

Of the "Big 3", I'll take Clapton any day in all his fazes....even the "Lay Down Sally" days! over Beck & Page :laugh2:

I've tried to get into Beck too but all the stuff I could get my hands on was rock-a-billy stuff or just kinda slow lead playing that wasn't all that god-like that everyone says. Hopefully I can get my hands on some of his good stuff, but what is that???

Re: Led Zeppelin

Lew's the resident "Beck-ster"..........

I figured a Greatest Hits disc would be a good primer, but I couldn't get into it at all.

Listen to Blow By Blow and Wired as a good Beck primer, but his early stuff is great also...Lew needs to chime in on this also...Beck is just an UnGodly player that has many many styles...

Re: Led Zeppelin

blow by blow and wired are great starts .. guitar shop is also quite incredible ... to admire beck requires an appreciation for subtlety .. his playing can sometimes be so sublime that you forget that this is a guy using only his fingers to create the sounds .. listen to the track 'where were you' very carefully and notice the times he creates mutli note melodies with the whammy bar without picking each individual note !!! ... he has such intimate control over the instrument and never seems 'mindless' in his playing .. each phrase speaks of creative intention ....

that being said, the electronica album he did last time out was simply terrible (IMO) ... sometimes creativity lays a turd ...

The playing on Guitar Shop (the only album I have of his is great, especially the way he uses the whammy bar... but I couldn't (still can't, really) stand the triggered drum beats and synth crap on that cd... :smack:

Re: Led Zeppelin

Yeah Guitar Shop...that's my favorite of his modern stuff.

Re: Led Zeppelin

led zeppelin is probably the greatest band to come out of the 60's and 70's... but i think you're all right, page doesn't have the chops that he used to.. and its obvious that plant cant sing as well.. damn its a shame to see such a legendary band just dissolve like that, and as fast as they did its prolly a good thing they split up.. you could compare that to britney spears going from innocent school girl to flat out ho in 2 years.. tolerable music to pure ass

Re: Led Zeppelin

I want to get in on the undead zombie thread!

For those interested why JPJ will not do any Zep stuff- and he is the stumbling block- according to an interview with Plant in People magazine (the last Everybody Loves Raymond episode cover), Plant said the reason is because during a Page/Plant/Zeppelin thing a reporter asked 'where's JPJ' and Plant's answer was "he's off parking the car."

That's the given reason.

The first song on the Outrider album could have been pretty cool if it was done properly with a decent singer and a decent guitar tone.

John, I dig Ramble On from your homepage... Page is the reason I picked up the guitar and started playing... as well as Angus. But both players lost alot after the deaths of their respected bandmates...

The 90's tour was pretty shabby in terms of playability... it was just not up to par with the multi-disc DVD released a couple of years ago...

It's best just to appreciate what the man gave us during the seventies. A legacy I love listening to.

Page's playing has become sloppy?!??! when did this happen?!?!?

Sir Strat... How are U?

I must say that the mid to late 60's and the whole of the 70's was the prime of Page's playing, IMO.

Did anyone enjoy Coverdale/Page?

TV.

Re: Led Zeppelin

I really liked the tune "Pride and Joy" with Paul Coverdel. Love that harmonica break in particular, and the layered guitar parts. The riff was classic Page.

Re: Led Zeppelin

I thought Coverdale Page was a respectable album.

Jimmy's always been a sloppy player (which is cool in itself), but the heroin really got to him. By the time Zep did Knebworth, he was shot.

As for Beck, I'd go for 'wired' and 'blow by blow'. Also try and track down a tune called 'nadia' off one of his recent albums. Also check out his version of 'manic depression' on the Hendrix tribute cd and 'a day in the life' on the George Martin beatles tribute cd. There's also a great recent live cd that was online only, and some great jams with SRV as well.

I think Beck is something you grow into if you're a post VH player. I didn't really like most of 'Wired' when I got it as a kid, but in recent years I've listened back and just been floored. 'Goodbye Pork Pie Hat' is the most amazing guitar performance.

Re: Led Zeppelin

I never "got" Jeff "who else" Beck as a solo artist.

I know he's great, I've heard bits and pieces, but... I guess I'm just a pop/rock dork.

I did, I even have a 12" picture disc of "Take me for a little while" which is my favourite tune on the album. It came out just as I started playing the guitar and when I started getting into Zeppelin. I still bust it out once in a while too!

Re: Led Zeppelin

on the side, anyone heard plant's new project mighty rearranger? pretty exotic with a tinge of old led zep feel. and no, he doesn't scream as much as he did with led zep.

Re: Led Zeppelin

I wouldn't want them back together making albums... what if they pulled a St. Anger?
All that would do is lose them a whole lotta fans (no pun intended)

Re: Led Zeppelin

I love zeppelin, probably my favorite band of all time.

I really don't know if Page has arthritis or not, but if he does I would think that surely does not help his playing!

My take on it is that I think Page is not one of these guys who lives in the past and has just moved on with his life. He probably doesn't practice much so when he shows to play the occasional live gig he sucks, kind of makes sense.

I'm sure if he wanted to he could regain his lost licks, he probably just doesnt have the motivation any more. Clapton and some others of that era just cant give up the spotlight/money/fame, etc, and just keep playing and as a result have maintained their skills. It's pretty simple, really. To each his own.

Re: Led Zeppelin

i don't need spotlight/money/fame to maintain my chops??

I mean, he has a few disabilities, like the sloppiness he's always had, and the drugs, and arthritis, but my dad and uncle have chronic arthritis and they manage to play every night for 4 hours at the gig. There's no excuse for giving up...
