Legendary albums recorded using cheap guitars, amps.

Re: Legendary albums recorded using cheap guitars, amps.

I don't think there is any such thing as "bad gear", just inappropriate appliance.

Too bad cheap gear must so often be deemed an inappropriate appliance. People are always going for that "expensive" sound nowadays.

Coy Boyles from the Zac Brown Band has used a $400 Ibanez completely stock that he's had for a long time...granted it was discounted but still he is playing live and in the studio with a $400 Ibanez. Kinda funny hearing him talk about it compared to all of these high end gear.

I don't think that counts so much, he seems to appreciate it for the nostalgia value more than anything. The rest of his gear his on the higher end side.

Perhaps, its still a guitar that as a guitar is cheap and he still plays it in the studio and on the road. It was $400...I would consider that cheap for being used on the road with a multi-platinum album band.

I meant application thereof in the sense of wrong gear for the wrong person/situation.
Anyways, I always thought that lack of financial means, availability of gear led to greater creativity to a certain degree. Back in the day, people just made what was there work, and didn't have the luxury of scouring the net for that high end gadget that does exactly what they want.

I would much rather listen to RATM or Nirvana than listen to non-Zappa Steve Vai or watch Family Guy.

Other people are just making their politics obvious. Wango Tango baby.

Tom Morello has some solo chops as well. Ever hear the solo on the song "Darkness" from The Crow soundtrack? Seriously, one of my favorite solos ever recorded.

Francis Dunnery did quite a bit of the early It Bites material on a Squier Strat.

Re: Legendary albums recorded using cheap guitars, amps.

Wasn't Zeppelin 1 recorded on a little Supro amp?
I know Zep and a few others like Clapton and the Stones also did some work with the Pignose amps. Dunno what albums or songs specifically though.

Yes to the Supro on LZ I, along with a Tele.

Re: Legendary albums recorded using cheap guitars, amps.

James Hetfield recorded all of his tracks on Kill 'Em All and Ride the Lightning with an Electra Flying V copy. He also used it for some of Master of Puppets, but I'm not sure how much.

not sure an RG 100 is classified as cheap

I'm not sure what they were back in the early 80s when he got his, but I bought an RG200 2x12 combo new in the early 2000s for around $450. For a brand new amp I would consider that cheap, high quality, but inexpensive

i paid 950 for my head back in 1990.. i did an inflation calculation on it awhile back.. equivalent to like 2100 now adays.. Did you know that a top of the line marshal back in the early 90's was 1400 tops..in the RG's day.. it was quite expensive for a SS amp at the time and cost as much as alot of tube amps did... I have some gear buyer guide mags from like 89-94..

I consider Cheap to be of substandard quality.. not really the cost..

I have an RH200 and I consider that cheap.. more power.. more channels.. ect..ect.. more bells than my RG 100 but the overall sound quality is inferior

Edward Van Halen and his Frankenstein guitar recorded many a great album.

Re: Legendary albums recorded using cheap guitars, amps.

Oasis's definitely Maybe. Noel used a Epiphone LP standard and some cheap Marshall and Vox amps I believe..

They used a lot of Epi's in the 90's, I wonder if they had stock pickups.
