Les Paul Std Pickup recomendation: looking to swap out JB Antiquity Bridge

Re: Les Paul Std Pickup recomendation: looking to swap out JB Antiquity Bridge

I use a roughcast A5 in one of my Custom 5s. It is less 'direct' I think, a little squishier in the mids. I like it better than the more direct C5. Sounds great in a mid heavy guitar, which is what I have it in.

How is The Custom on clean tones and on middle position with either a Jazz, 59 or AP2?

How does the regular old ceramic Custom compare to the C5 and C8? I keep reading that the C5 is way mid scooped and that the C8 can have this weird cocked wha midrange thing going any? I that so?

Ceramics aren't known for their cleans; that's where alnicos excel. C5 is mid scooped with a good dose of treble. C8's are popular with a lot of members; I've never had a 'cocked wah' sound with mine. They're like a combination of the best qualities of the three stock Customs (ceramic, A5, and A2). If you're looking for a warm vintage tone with a lot of texture, but don't want the rounded high end and loose low end of the CC, an UOA5 magnet will give that. A few guys swear that A4's work well in them. The Custom platform is pretty versatile, taking just about any magnet well.

In the right wind, ceramic can give great cleans.

I've never had an issue with cleans and the Custom when using the middle position.

At one point I had put an Alnico 4 magnet in my custom. I have since changed it back to stock. As I said, the Custom was the closest I found to a P90 tone in a humbucker. I swapped out a ton of pickups through my Lea Paul and directly compared them to my P90 LP. The Custom has "those" mids to my ears.

I have never liked JB's in anything mahogany... unless the JB has an A2 magnet in it.

My 2 cents for a replacement would be a Custom or a Whole Lotta Bridge. The problem with a Custom 5 in a les paul is that Les Pauls naturally have a big bass end and bright clear highs. If you put a pickup in that emphasizes the same, like a Custom 5, it is too much of a good thing. You need some mid content to fill in what the Les Paul does not emphasize.

Les Paul with Whole Lotta Humbuckers + JTM 45 is perfect for 70s classic rock.
