Les Paul vs SG

Awesome.

I have an SG that I love, and am still trying to figure out how to either tame the fat mids or use them musically. It's been challenging for any scenario outside of me jamming either jazz or hard rock by myself at home.

yeah, an LP Special with P90s is also going to have them mids. -do you have an EQ pedal? I'd tame the 700hz -1k range. but still gas the 2-3k

I wanted to like the SG, but the balance and proportions just weren't right for me. Because of where the strap button is it feels like it's more of a reach for the lower frets, and makes it feel more neck heavy. LP's are more comfortable for me all the way around.

As far as looks, I think SG's are rather attractive, especially the full pickguard 66 style.
Now if you want UGLY, one needs look no further than a Telecaster.

George Gruhn said Tele's look like a high school shop project.

Haha, kind of true -In fairness, the Tele was the very first mass produced commercial electric guitar (that wasnt a hawaiin music variant) style

How many people look at a Ford Model T or a Pennyfarthing/Dandy Horse and compare it to the lines and styles of today and consider them "ugly"?

The fact that people still buy them (they may even still be the #1 guitar year to year sometimes) and they are extraordinarily relevant even today makes the Tele even more incredible.

It's an ugly thing of beauty I guess

and you only need guitar body contours if you are chubby :lmao:

I think it just says a lot about how resistant to change guitarists tend to be. :P

I have a lefty SG (no neckdive either), and I'd show pics, but I don't want to blind anyone.

SG for me - more comfortable and primo upper fret access (can't jive well with a LP's small, heavy body). I don't own one, sadly, but have played a couple - vintage and VOS ones felt/sounded nicest, and nice deep bevels. One thing I don't like so much about them is the bunched up controls and front mounted jack on most 2-3 pu models, but, eh, can't have it all.

Humbucker or P90, it's all good.

SGs look great, and upper fret access is far superior to a Les Paul. But they don't sound nearly as good. But I bet if you'd do the Robin thing and build an SG with the same wood thickness and mahogany/maple combo as a Les Paul, and moved the strap button to the upper horn, you'd a have a killer guitar on your hands.

There was a bloke on the LP forum who built one like that years ago. Looked pretty good.
