Let's have a frank and serious discussion about the Dimarzio Tonezone.

So, what can you tell me about the Tone Zone? No, I'm not going to ask what Duncan it compares to. :laugh2:

Re: Let's have a frank and serious discussion about the Dimarzio Tonezone.

it is VERY middy. it seems to work well in basswood, particularily Ibanez.

i don't have anything more to offer on it though.

I'd like to know more about this pick-up as well, I hear it's TOO bassy, but don't take my word for it...

Re: Let's have a frank and serious discussion about the Dimarzio Tonezone.

Really depends on personal taste I find. Some people swear by it, but I found it to be too bassy and lack clarity, and were talking a basswood paper-thin neck bolt-on recessed floyd Ibanez RG here. Tried it in a high end mahogany-bodied thick neck-thru J-Custom RG, and that thing was mud mud mud, imho.

Just my $.02

I have one in a mahogony Ibanez 540 sabre and it sounds good for 80s/early 90s shreddy kind of stuff. Has an interesting effect - when you hit a single note it almost sounds like you have a half ****ed wah pedal on.
I personally didn't find it too muddy (don't play my Ibanez anymore).
Depends what you are into - if you're into that whole Paul Gilbert shred thing, IMO this is the right pup. Hey its what he uses!

Re: Let's have a frank and serious discussion about the Dimarzio Tonezone.

It's a great pickup but it's just a very niche pickup for very bright guitars IMO or for when a very bassy/mid sound is required.

It gets a bad rap but it does exactly what it's designed to do....however it is much too dark for me personally.

Re: Let's have a frank and serious discussion about the Dimarzio Tonezone.

it is too ONE DIMENSIONAL for one thing
it does ONE thing and even though it does that one thing very well it gets old very fast. it has a wah in the middle tone when playing leads that cannot be dialed out.
it has a big low end(bass, low mids) and a fierce treble.
what i hated about it was that amp settings were very integral on this pup.
i could only find one amp setting that made the tone zone sound OK.
it has a pre boosted EQ in the pup, that dimarzio describes as "adding another set of tone controls"
definitely not my first pick for a all time favorite pup.
works for some and did not work for me :)

FWIW, i feel that the tone zone would work best on a all maple body guitar with a maple neck and board and a floyd.
in mahogany or other darker tone woods forget it :smack:
the air zone is much nicer overall BTW
