All right. Here we go - sans coffee. Deal with it.
Duncan V1 Pickup Booster. Nice. But why TF are you running it into the compressor? Switch those pedals right now dammit.
Joyo Compressor? Good god man, have some self esteem. Of all the pedals to cheap on,. and compressor is NOT it.
EHX Soul Food. Good choice for "no one needs a real Klon"
Channel switching at the other end. I like Amp channel switchers on the board. And of course, Mesa - so style points there.
Looks like Soul Food to OCD. If you were really OCD you'd put it on the front row with the rest of the boosts. In the right damn order: Booster > Soul Food > OCD
Catalina Chorus looks next. No idea why anyone needs a "dynamic" chorus, but I like it because it has a delay knob on it. So few appreciate what that does for a chorus.
Catalina to Small Stone - No hate on the Stone. Just not my thing.
Next up, Garage Tone Delay. I bet you think I'm gonna hate on that, don't you? Call it cheap trash like that Joyo compressor? Well, you would be wrong!
- First of all, made by Visual Sound (People who made the Route 66 Compressor, which is what you should have!)
- Second, series co-designed with R.G. Keene (Don't know who he is? https://thejhsshow.com/articles/visual-sounds-garagetone-series)
- Third, knobs are FAR apart and EASY to adjust on the fly!
I have had one of these on a board as my "on the fly" delay (and AIn't Talking' Bout Love slap) quite a while. It sounds really good, even while not technically analog. Well played!
I much prefer my tuner at the front (pure signal, mute, etc) But I can see it at the end too. And TU3 - classic (enough).
MXR power brick. Cool.
What I'm wondering is that the hell happened with the back rows? The front is super tidy. The back field is just kind of pedals sitting on blankets in the outfield.
- Put the Catalina back where the OCD is
- Even up the swirl and delay
- Did I mention get a real compressor?
- Figure out how to fix the overhang. Easily enough real estate to fix that - unless you don't tune?!?!?!
All in all, I will say
- Duncan pedal pair, FUlltone
- EHX pair
- Boss/MXR
- Joyo/Garage
This does have a nice range of budget to high quality (but not bootees) pedals. It has a certain vibe.
Clean the damn wires up too. Electrical tape is your friend. And DON'T put a damn foot in the pic!!!! Steve is instigating...
So first off, thank you for the review and for sharing your thoughts and suggestions.
First I'll address the Boost/Compressor: SD recommend placing the SD Boost first in the signal chain. I'm pretty sure this is so the PU Resonance switch works properly. I never use that switch, so I probably should have the compressor before the boost. I do like having the boost before the dirt boxes for "tone juice." The JOYO compressor is actually quite good, especially for the price, and I like that it triggers pedal snobs.
The layout: The reason pedals on the second row isn't nice and uniform like the first is for pragmatic reasons. Stepping on the button without hitting the knob of another pedal, and cables between pedals are 6" and certain pedals had to be in certain spot to make the connections. For instance, the SD pedals have the IN/OUT at the top of the pedal instead of the sides. If I reconfigure the order of Boost and Compressor I'd likely have to do so while keeping the in the same spot.
OCD about my OCD: If I switch the position of the Catalina and the OCD I can't make the connections while keeping the chain the same. This is due to the SD's IN/OUT being at the top and my cables being 6".
Couple reasons for the Tuner at the end:
A) SD told me to put the boost first and I listened (even though I don't use the switch that is the reason they advised putting it first, lol).
B) Buffered output at the end of the chain
C) works just as well at tuning and muting at the end of the chain as at the beginning
D) It doesn't overhang by much, just enough to drive Ace crazy!
