Lew's first clip post!!!

Re: Lew's first clip post!!!

Now we just need the details brother! Gear, who was playing what parts, etc...

Re: Lew's first clip post!!!

Thanks Guys! I was a little nervous about posting my playing what with so many great players here on the forum and all.

Ryan: HUGE THANKS! I'm so ignorant when it comes to MP3 stuff there's no way I could have got this up without you.

So this is a new song my friend and songwriting partner Sherrie Scott and I wrote for our CD. We recorded it at our buddy Charlie Davis' home studio.

That's my brother Bruce Collins on drums, Micheal Willis on P-Bass, Sherrie Scott ( http://www.sherriescott.com ) on vocals and me on guitar.

The four of us did the basic rhythm track live...no overdubs.

Then I went in a few days later and overdubbed the lead guitar. I did a few takes but what you hear was done in one pass and it wasn't pieced together from a bunch of takes or anything. It's pretty much what I sound like live I guess.

I used my homebrew '57 style Strat with Antiquity Surfers and played the lead guitar stuff through my '66 blackface Deluxe Reverb amp. I did the rhythm track with my '59 Fender tweed Princeton amp.

No overdrive pedal...just a guitar and a George L cord, although I did use a Line 6 Verbzilla for the reverb on the rhythm track, as my old tweed Princeton has no reverb built into it.

My Deluxe Reverb does have built in reverb so I used a little and turned the amp up to about 5 for the solo and fills.

Many Thanks...especially to you Ryan!

Lew

Top-notch stuff, Lew! You are one of the greats on the forum. Don't hesitate to post more. It'd be a sin not to.

Re: Lew's first clip post!!!

Sounds exactly like I thought it would...and that's a good thing!!:)

Re: Lew's first clip post!!!

Nice stuff, Lew. You've got no reason to be shy or humble about that... it was very good.

If nothing else it's proof that your excellent tone advice over the years wasn't unfounded. ;) (j/k) Tone was very fitting for the tune. Like what other's have said, it's pretty close to what I thought I would hear. Thank you for sharing.

Once again guys: MANY THANKS!

Really relieved (and happy!) that you like it.

Re: Lew's first clip post!!!

Nice stuff, Lew. Sounds great. Great tone too. Keep me posted on when the record will be out.

Guys, trust me when I say this, Lew is holding back on this one. ;) The man can rip it up. He and I jammed together at the Dallas Guitar Show last year through a couple Mission Aurora's and man, what a great time that was.

Yeah, you could tell he's got more in his bag from that solo style and tone which is soooo cool. C'mon Lew, bust out with some hardcore fretwork!!! We've been waiting many years for this.

Thanks Erik...that was fun in Dallas. Great getting a chance to play with you too!

We had one of Bruce's new 30 watt/2 6L6 Mission Aurora amps in the studio with us but it was a bit loud and I don't like recording with the master volume turned down. Besides, I have all of these little 10 - 22 watt Fenders that are perfect for recording volumes so I went with those.

The tweed Fender Princeton that I used for the rhythm track was the amp I took lessons on in 1966 at Hewitt's Music in Detroit. I went back to Detroit about 1980 and it was still there being used for guitar lessons...so I bought it. That amp can really scream but I didn't use it for the lead guitar. Instead, I turned it down and used it for the rhythm part. I was kind of thinking of Steve Cropper although it doesn't really sound like his style.

Our friend and engineer, Charlie Davis, asked me to try and play the fills in a BB King style so for some of them, I did. It was hard to hold back when it came time for the solo though...I felt like I overplayed a little (laugh!) but it was fun.

I thought Bruce played his butt off and Micheal too.

And isn't Sherrie something else? She's a real sweetheart and my favorite female vocalist that I've worked with.

This photo is from the HOMEPAGE of her website. She's a terrific jazz and blues vocalist and does voice overs and commercials for a living. Plus she's an actress and playwright! Very talented lady.
