Lighter fluid, which brands to buy?

I just recently read that lighter fluid or napthla as some call it, is great for cleaning guitars. I was just wondering what brands I should use. I'm not sure if the chemical makeup is different between the brands/types or not.

Cleaning? For a moment there I thought this was your intention...

Dosent matter IMO as long as it made to go into a zippo, it will be fine!

Lighter fluid or Naphta should be used BEFORE a finish is applied th the bare wood. I would not recommend using this instead of a over the counter type of guitar polish.

Ah....Zippo...the REDNECK lighter of choice! :omg: :22:

Jimi preferred Ronson.

I prefer Zippo brand.

Why can't anyone spell "naptha?"

Naptha is great for removing gunk on the guitar, not as an all over polish. Just in spots, not all over. As far as I've heard it's completely safe- but after I clean off what needs cleaning, I wipe the guitar well.

I use Ronsonol. Works great to clean up hardware too. I use it when I'm not at work to use my agristrip... Like right now, I'm tidying up a Kahler Flyer with it.

That was my first thought as well.

Nafta was a trade agreement. It resulted in the Nafta Strat. You know, the ones with the "M" on the headstock next to the serial #.

Zippo or any other lighter fluid works just fine and naptha can also be bought at most major hardware stores by the gallon. For cleaning guitars it's the best thing I have found and it's the only solvent based cleaner I would use on laquer guitar finishes. Just remember that naptha is used as a cleaner and not a polish.

Naptha is also great for cleaning funky bridge parts and other hardware that gets sweated on a lot. I sometimes break down vintage type bridge assemblies down to the screws and soak the parts in naptha for a bit and then soak them in WD40 after that and then let them air dry. Nothing like having all the set screws in a bridge working smoothly and properly when you are setting up a guitar or when trying to impress a new customer.

Read the can and see if Naptha is the first ingredient listed.

Is lighter fluid that hard to come by?

I use Zippo and Ronsol. It's not to hard to come by, any Giant Eagle or Wal-Mart will have it for $2-$3 for a bottle.
