Line 6 Spider II

Re: Line 6 Spider II

I have played on em...

you can get em new over at guitar center for $400 for the 2x12

hell of a deal, they sound pretty good for that type of price; but the harmonycentral.com reviews indicate alot of tech trouble and repairs so I am not super enthusiastic about the product...

other than technical repair issues, a good amp for a beginner/intermediate that needs versatility (i.e. good for cover bands)

Re: Line 6 Spider II

well i bought one over a year ago and its been amazing for me thus far. i got the half stack though. i mean i think it sounds pretty good for a solid state. my next goal is to replace it with either a dsl or tsl 100. im not sure which one yet.

Re: Line 6 Spider II

i own one.. it was ok when i got it and i was all happy about how nice i thought the tone was.. then i heard my friends peavey XXX, from then on i found that the spider II's tone was too weak and had no balls, i got the Peavey JSX head and am using it on my Spider II cab until i sell my Spider II..

its an ok amp except it does have a few technical problems that will kick in down the road probably, my volume knob went completely wack.

anywho.. enjoy your amp while it lasts, get a tube amp next for it will sound more real and gives your guitars real tone through it.

Re: Line 6 Spider II

I was shocked to see Alex Lifeson was using a Spider for backstage practices a few years ago....

ya that was strange.... they had customized tour t-shirts in there and they would throw them out to the audience sometimes... Each dryer had shirts with different numbers.... the back said something to the effect "I got This Shirt From Dryer Number 3 at The Rush concert"...... something to that effect... i could be wrong but that is the way it was explained to me....

The DVD is worth getting

I'm not. Quiet, built in chorus (We know Lifeson loves himself some chorus), etc. Plus he's been a huge fan of solid state before.

I'm not a fan of Spiders, though. I've heard and seen some tech issues with them, and the only good sound I got out of one was a clean slapback rockabilly thing. Then I tried to get some classic rock goin', let's say 2112. Just didn't work. Nothing about it sounded right. Then a friend asks if I should use his DS-1 pedal with it. :smack: It's already got enough gain!!!!

Re: Line 6 Spider II

I have a Spider II 112... less than a year. I had some real problems getting a good stable sound out of it when I first started with it. Then after a lot of work, I finally learned how to program it. I could get some pretty decent sounds out of it.

But it seemed like it would randomly change on me. I still think the programming would change or drop out sometimes - think of a Windows Blue-screen-of-death type of event - it is, after all just a computer.

But one thing I think I discovered, the Spider is very senstive to the different output levels of pickups. I would have all the channels set to a volume level (that is, make all four channels the same level, controlled by the master volume) - then I would change pickup and suddenly the channels were all different levels. Very frustrating.

If you play one guitar with one pickup - you should be okay.

Want to buy one?

Re: Line 6 Spider II

I had a 35 watt combo for a while. Frankly, they suck. I have never played something that sounded so cold and sterile and was impossible to play. It gave me a headacke every time I plugged in. The halfstacks are a diffferent story though. They sound somewhat good, but still sterile.

Re: Line 6 Spider II

i know what you mean about it having no balls. my buddy just got a blue voodoo head and it sounds totally ballsier than mine. so my goal is to get a tube amp next.

Re: Line 6 Spider II

Ive used them a lot at uni/college... to be honest im not a fan of them, theres some decent tones to be had for the price but i wouldent buy one.

Re: Line 6 Spider II

They're ok amps. They are great for bedroom practice since they can get alot of tones. They aren't a Vetta II or a tube amp but they are decent for a non-gigging musician.

Re: Line 6 Spider II

I'm a Line 6 supporter, but I'm not a Spider fan. IIRC, it only has the Line 6 amp models, which is a significant weakness. But it could be a good practice amp. Then again, for that price you could get a used POD xt or a POD 2 and have a better practice amp (via headphones).

Re: Line 6 Spider II

I hate them.

There's no other way to describe the sound then "fake".

Ok. I shouldn't be too hard on them. It actually has some really nice fender models, you can get decent clean tones... Push em and everything goes to mush. The controls (bass mid treble etc.) barely do anything (you sound like **** no matter how you turn them).

I gave mine away. I didn't feel comfortable charging someone for it.

does anyone have one of these or played on one of these? if so what do you think of it?

I work at a big music store... and we are CONSTANTLY getting them returned for repairs... DON'T DO IT! It's a shame that Line 6 makes such a low-quality amp, when some of their other products (Flextone III, etc.) are of such high qualitity!

Re: Line 6 Spider II

They just went on a half-price sale at MF. Is Line 6 getting ready to bring out the Spider III?

Re: Line 6 Spider II

If your gonna buy a Line 6 AMP, buy a Vetta. Nothing else they make compares.(Then compare it to a tube amp, you'll be suprised) Vetta is very much a tweakers amp. If you looking for "Plug-n-Play" situation, it may not be for you.
