Line 6 vs. Vox XL

I recently put up a thread titled 'Best Heavy Metal Amp'. After getting some replies and doing some research of my own I found two amps which I like that both got many good reviews, the Vox XL 30 watt amp and the Line 6 30 watt spider 3. The problem is I'm not sure which one to buy. I play mainly heavy metal with the occasional blues or classic rock, and sometimes I play with my friend whose a drummer. Right now I have a Squire strat but I'm looking to upgrade to a BC Rich WMD Beast by the end of the summer. I've tried both amps and they both sounded really good so I'm kind of at a crossroads here.

Re: Line 6 vs. Vox XL

The entire VOX modelling range gets a hell of a lot of LOVE on this forum and over at HC Forums.

You do not read much about the Line6 amps these days, unless you actively ask about them.
Their Pod's get great reviews these days though !
My heart lies towards the Vox VT amps, if i had to choose, tbh.

I'll admit, the Line6 VETTA II's (not spiders) looks pretty impresive - but have yet to test drive one !

Re: Line 6 vs. Vox XL

Go some place and play them both dude.

We don't know what sounds good to you as well as you do.

Re: Line 6 vs. Vox XL

Hm... I like the 'Insane' setting on Spider. It really has that thrash metal morph :)

I have plain old Valvetronix AD30 chrome, which was better then Spider3 for everything else except it was lacking that extreme metal settings (which may not even be useful at loud levels?). I later tried XL series, and it seems they've added more gain to it, and with 'Damaged / Thrashed' models you won't be missing Line6 at all.

So the obvious answer would be to and try them both out :)
Overall, Vox Valvetronix rules, just go and find it out yourself.

+1

IMO anything Line 6 made is a toy compared to the Vetta series although I never heard the tube amp they made. So far I've bought the AD60VTX combo amp from Vox and the Tonelab LE and they are both incredible amps for anything from elevator music to metal. IMO.

Re: Line 6 vs. Vox XL

If it was my choice I would take Vox over Line 6 every single time. But its like empty pockets said its what sounds better to YOU. All of the line 6 amps i have heard have been solid state and i am a tube amp snob so don't listen to me anyway. Best of luck though!!

Re: Line 6 vs. Vox XL

personally i think the spiders sound terrible not enough room to work with their models. i have a flextone ii and i typically change the cab model and what not to make the stuff sound good. on top of that i run it in stereo with a small tube combo to give it more crunch in the mid range. works well for me. but i would try the valvetronics. i friggin <3 vox... just please stay away from the spider its kinda... Blah...

Re: Line 6 vs. Vox XL

Personally, the new Vox VT series is better than both the XL and original Valvetronix line (VTX). Better everything and more channels.

Re: Line 6 vs. Vox XL

yeah if i wanted a new modeling amp i would be going out and getting the new VT30 ASAP...the only thing i don't like about it is you can't use an extension cab with it so it's not very useful for gigging unless you do the 'mic to the PA' thing.

for recording and micing and practicing and whatnot, it's perfect.

Re: Line 6 vs. Vox XL

Yes, the latest from Vox is the VT series. Has 22 models, bunch of memory presets. I just don't like the knobs :)

Stay away from Roland Cube also. It is so digital and lifeless.

I completely disagree with this statement. Although there may be better stuff out there, I don't find my Roland Cube 30X to be "digital and lifeless" at all. I find it to be a vesatile amp that can emulate a wide variety of tones and it doesn't sound"digital" at all to me.

you could always do a bit of internal surgery and install input/output jacks on the back with a speaker wire hooked to them when you're not using an external cab....

in fact, i've been thinking of doing this to my ad15vt, i just haven't gotten around to gettin' it done:dunno:

Re: Line 6 vs. Vox XL

I've got the Vox AD15VT and love it. I have not tried the Vox XL, but have tried pretty much all of the offerings from L6.

That being said, I've never been able to get it on with L6. Pods and modelling amps never gave me tones I was looking for. Too artificial for me. Too bad cuz I really like some of the offerings by L6 and other people seem to get great tones... not me.

The Vox's sound much better IMO. Much easier to dial in and most of their setting are very useful.

In terms of usefulness and overall satisfaction and sound - I'd go with the Vox, hands down.

Re: Line 6 vs. Vox XL

Say, what ever happened to the Vox AD120 VTX amps ???

Ayear or two i was told this is such a FANTASTIC amp . . .

Any one ?

That was the original Valvetronix line. Had more presets, had pedals integrated into the unit and a bunch of other stuff. People swore they were much better than the Chrome grill version and it sounds like it from what I've heard (not to mention they looked much better.)

VT is much more refined than the ADxxVT anf the XL lines.

And i do like the white knobs!

I would recommend the Line6 Gearbox (now POD farm) software stuff if someone didn't "need" to have an amp.

@tonedeaf1: Thats's why he has to go himself to try them out, and just maybe he'll find out that Roland suits his purpose better, even though some other amp may be overall better :)

@slow: Those were fantasctic amps, but VTX were not cheap:) Something like $800 maybe?
Like Jimmy said: various Pedal models included, more amps modeled than on Chrome, separate effect+delay+reverb settings, better speakers, blue diamond grill.

I really don't like the white ones on VTs probably cause i'm used to old blacks, but it wouldn't stop me from buying one.
