Lipstick Pickup - Change

BRIMCV

Hi, I have a Squier Vintage Modified Stratocaster Surf Electric Guitar with Duncan Designed LS-102 for Strat tube-style single-coil neck, middle and bridge pickups.

I was wondering if it is possible to change a pickup for say a hot rail or lil 59... in the bridge.

Totally new to the guitar scene so any advise would be appreciated.

Cheers

Absolutely, but either will be much hotter/louder than the remaining lipsticks, so balance between them may (or may not, depending on your preference) be an issue.

That is my worry, was not sure how the balance would work out with the more "jangly" lipstick style...

Welcome!

A Hot Rails is gonna a be A LOT louder than a lipstick pickup. You are either gonna have to switch out all of the lipsticks or choose another type of pickup to put with them. Traditionally, the output of a lipstick pickup is pretty low. Most standard single coils are much louder.

Put your hotrails in and enjoy.

See how the volume drop effects you when you switch to the lipsticks.

You can EASILY make up for this with a clean boost pedal like a Keeley Katana.

Since you are new to the guitar, I'm pretty sure you are not (yet) switching pickups mid song for different passages yet so check and see what works for you first.

It is perfectly normal to have mismatched pickups in your guitar if you are using them in completely different ways: i.e. Your hotrails will be used with channel 2 with such and such settings and your lipsticks will be used on channel 1 with such and such settings.

If you are going to start switching all over the place, they are going to need to be more closely matched.

The thing is...right now...in the beginning when everything is new and amazing...try it and have fun with it. Enjoy these times when you make those little tonal mismatches. They are great times and now is when you are going to learn the most.

Take care,

~LD
