Locking Tuners? pros vs contras

Re: Locking Tuners? pros vs contras

I put Grover locking machines on my LP because its 15 year old tuners just weren't keeping up with me anymore. It helps when I hit em hard, but I'm not gonna run out and upgrade ALL of my tuners because of it. I will wait until they start crapping out, then upgrade to locking. I don't see a reason to rush.

Re: Locking Tuners? pros vs contras

I've just bought a set of Scaller locking tuners for my G&L. Don't think I could do without them!

Still, string binding and improperly installed strings are the main reason for tuning problems, not the tuners themselves. Any decent tuners will keep the string tuned perfectly if the strings are wrapped properly and there is no binding at the nut.

All my guitars have high quality non-locking tuners and I doesn't have any problem with tuning stability. Locking tuners offer the best results when you have a trem equiped guitar. Otherwise standard tuners are perfectly fine...

Re: Locking Tuners? pros vs contras

I have gotohs that came with the kramer, i use the scott_F method of stringing them and no problems so far. As things are i don't see the need for locking

Re: Locking Tuners? pros vs contras

Once a person learns how to properly wrap a string to a post, the need for locking tuners just about goes away.

Re: Locking Tuners? pros vs contras

I think locking tuners are great, but I don't own any guitars that have them. Mine are all traditional, but I don't have any tuning problems. If you put them on correctly and stretch them properly, they all accomplish the same purpose.

o.k. now you've got me wondering, I must confess I don't know if I'm wrapping my strings properly, can someone please elaborate on this ? Sorry for the dumb question.

how about this, which has more tuning stability :

sperzel locking tuners + Earvana compensated nut+ TonePros locking bridge w/stop tailpiece (dream setup)

That's what came factory on my ESP, it works great.

Re: Locking Tuners? pros vs contras

My bass has locking sperzels, and I didn't even know until the first time I had to change strings on it... :laugh2:

I think they make string changing so much easier... they're worth it if only for that.

Re: Locking Tuners? pros vs contras

I have Planet Waves tuners on my Strat. Those things cut the excess strings off automatically when tuning to pitch, LOL! My tech friend was like :smack: :smack: :smack: when I first showed it to him... :D

Nothing dumb about an honest question. This link above shows one method, but it's pretty tried and true.

Eh...again...wildly unpopular....but here goes.

I never use that method. Tried it a few times and found it to be more annoying than anything else. There was little to no difference in stability between that method and simply putting a few solid winds around the post.

Other techs seem to love that method. When you do it right and can do it quick it's certainly a time saver. But from my experiences a few winds makes the post act as a cleat and provides the same benifits.

I'm still of the belief that 85% of tuning problems happen at the nut. The other 15% are almost always exclusive to the saddles at the bridge.

Re: Locking Tuners? pros vs contras

Yeah, that's how I string. I never have tuning problems so I'm inclined to agree that they're unnecessary. The only thing that seems useful is that string changes would be a bit faster- but it only takes like 10 minutes so I don't see what the hype is about.
