Looking for 30 watt-ish Plexi style combo - got a big budget, live through my own G.A

Alright,

I am looking for a 112 combo amp that has around 30 watts of power or is 50 and has power flexibility features. Single channel is just fine and am looking for a Plexi style tone, but with a modern twist. Think THD Flexi 50, Pearl City Brit 50 or some moded Marshall type tones. I am looking for a medium gain amp that will serve as a great pedal platform. Rock, fusion, funk and instrumental stuff is where I am going for ith this. I really dug Andy Timmons tones off his Resolutions album, which was recorded with a Plexi and early 70s JMP.

I dont want to skimp out on this and want a bone freaking reliable amp, boutique builders/ideas welcome. I already sent Scot (Celtic AMps) an email as well :)

FX loop is also a must, again, think modern 30 watt Plexi. Looking to spend no more than $2k.

Buy a bluesbreaker reissue and send it off to David Bray or any other number of amp gurus.

Dr. Z remedy is a killer sounding amp as well.

Just buy a THD Flexi 50.

20 or 50 watts...master volume...FX loop...tweakable...

Sounds like you've answered your own question.

The Carvin V3 is cool, but not what I am looking for at all. They sound too... stiff? Processed is what comes to my mind, but that sounds insulting. Just not the tone I am looking for really.

Snap, the THD is switchable to 20 watts. Didn't read that bit!

I am also looking at Granger Amps, www.grangeramp.com

The M50 model in a combo version, mainly.

Blackstar HT20 or HT40

ugh, the THDs are 2,600 new and are hard to find used.

Blackstar HT series? Really not what I am looking for mate.

Which Riveras would you say are Plexi ish, Ben? Of the amps I have owned/tried none of the Venus series really do it, or the chubster, pub/club...or the old stuff from the 80s. The british channels on all I have played are more like a dry sounding 2203 with more gain.

Not sure where you're located, but theres a THD Flexi listed in the "The Gear Page" Emporium.

Get a used Chubster combo, put a 5751 in v1, and perhaps a speaker swap, and you will be VERY close!

Of course, there is also the Marshall Class 5 and the new 1 Watt plexi; I would be inclined to check out the 1W JTM if you are not gigging, and match it with a nice 4x10 or 4x12 ...

I am completely happy with my setup (class 5, V30-see my new clip over in T&C), I was just curious what you would recommend cos I know you have some experience with some Riveras that I do not. I loved my Chubster, I'm sure a speaker swap would have helped to get more ...err..60s?...70s?.... But on it's own it was definitely more "modern". Dry, tighter and more focused, with more lows and presence than a typical Marshall.

Re: Looking for 30 watt-ish Plexi style combo - got a big budget, live through my own

Not sure if Dr Z makes a plexi clone but every amp I've heard of theirs is awesome. I don't own one myself but the other guitar player and my guitar teacher both own them (Maz 38 Senor models).

Very transportable, plenty loud with a nice rich tone. Very reliable as well.

UPDATE
Evidently there is a Remedy model that supposed to do Plexi tones but not sure if it comes in combo config

yes, the HT5 combo and HT40.

They're cool amps, but not the tone I am looking for, they're a little.... too hot? They sound more metal TO ME, then they do sound rock/fusion... its hard to say it right. again, cool amps, but not what I am looking for.

I know what you're saying. I bought one (HT20Head) and thought the "drive" was too distorted for my taste also. Tried a 12AY7 in V2 which helped a lot to 'tame' the distortion. Blackstar HT's surely are Hi-Gain!

Re: Looking for 30 watt-ish Plexi style combo - got a big budget, live through my own

I know it is not a single channel amp, but I just found a series I Budda Superdrive 30 head on CL for $1,200 and the owner says it is SN 47 from the original 150, all PTP. Going to check it out soon, this would be a great snag and a local amp builder could surely make it into a combo for me. the series I stuff goes for well over $1,200 for the SD30s, seen a few go for 1800-2000

It's a fantastic amp, but not Plexi-ish at all. I have one of Jeff Bober's new amps, it's a monster!
