Looking for a 50 - 100 watt tube amp head

Re: Looking for a 50 - 100 watt tube amp head

The 5:50 looks like to be an older model without graphic eq. I think I'll pass on it. I'll have a look again if a newer model comes up. They're a bit too expensive new.

How different are the Blackstar HT and S1 amps? The HT100 would easily fit in the budget. I probably should test the S1 more thoroughly some day. Maybe the darkness or lack of mids can be dialed out.

If the Bogner New Yorker is only 12 watts I think I'll pass. I do love 6v6s but I don't believe it has enough volume. The THD didn't even with a KT88 so I reckon I'll need at least the 50 watts to be safe.

Egnater amps are very rare around here. There's no distributor in the country and I can't find them that well even in bigger european shops.

The Blackstar HT and series one line are different but neither are bad. The HT venue line is geared towards the working musician and are great amps. I have a HT40 1x12 combo and it's great and can hang with most half stacks volume wise. Also all their amps come with a emulated out so you can run straight to a board.

Also another amp you may want to look into is the Fryette SigX model.

LOL! Hey, I didn't mean that you SHOULDN'T go look at it. :) The older version, which isn't that old, is a great amp, even without the GEQ. And since Mesa's have a great effects loop, you could add an MXR 10-band EQ or one of the new Mesa pedals that has their excellent 5-band EQ, if you really need the extra tone shaping. And with the additional 5-watt setting, that amp can rock a lot of different venues. So I think you should at LEAST go plug into it and see what you think.

The crucible is always the bandstand. I've heard amps that sounded great in my living room that simply couldn't cut it at a gig--and vice-versa. My Marshall JCM800 sounded terrible at low volume, but at stage levels in a hot club; when the amp got nice and hot about the third set--it was cookin'! Some of the YouTube videos can be helpful; and playing an amp in the store can tell you some things...but the stage is the ultimate test.

Play as many amps as you can--that's the best advice I can give. Good luck.

I agree..

The S1's aren't bad at all, but I preferred the HT's. I tried an HT40 at Sam Ash and was impressed. Good sound, volume galore..
I needed a replacement amp because my Haze 40 went down.. so I bought the HT100 off the web sight unseen, because of the price. It has been a solid purchase. IMO the clean channel, OD1 and OD2 are great. If it goes down, I will get another. I have been complimented on the sound by my "I only buy Marshall" buddy... he has one now lol.

I have the newer version 5:50+ - it's an awesome amp and it drives my 4x12 with V30s just fine. It doesn't have the low end clarity and thump that my dual recto does but man, what an awesome, versatile amp.

The EQ is nice and it's something I do use, so I get why you'd want that function. That being said, you can now purchase the Mesa 5 band EQ stack as an outboard pedal. But the 5:50+ (new version) has a 25 watt mode and the clean channel is absolutely amazing on that setting, so yeah I think the "+" version is worth it.

I have heard Mesa is very, very expensive in Europe...it's funny, I remember talking to someone over there and told them I had a Mesa and they thought I had to rob a bank!

Good luck with your amp search --

Re: Looking for a 50 - 100 watt tube amp head

I'll try the HT100 out.

VHT/Fryette amps are really rare around here. I'd certainly have a good look at them if they could be found used. There's a single Sig:X for sale but it's a bit too expensive.

The Mesa prices are obscene when bought new but luckily they seem to take a bigger hit when sold used. I could get a Diezel for the same price new.

To be clear, while the low power options of the many amplifiers are by no means negative points, I have zero use for them. I already have two low power amps I like and the big one to be will be permanently at the rehearsal place or at gigs.

Re: Looking for a 50 - 100 watt tube amp head

marshall tsl and dsl lines would suit your needs perfectly. you could not just have preamp gain, but the legendary marshall roar!

They are great amps and the prices on them are excellent. I've been using one for a while but just upgraded to something with four channels to cut down on my pedal needs.

Re: Looking for a 50 - 100 watt tube amp head

I'm definitely intrigued by the Marshalls. I think the local shop carries DSLs and JVMs. I'll try them out. Both should be easy to found used too.

ArtieToo, did you mean the Roland amp or has the deal changed since you posted? I didn't know that Musicians Friend has started to ship internationally. That can change things a bit. I do wonder though if the amps they sell are available in 230V/50Hz.
