Looking for a Metal Guitar

I want a metal guitar. I have a guitars that will cover blues, rock, country, jazz, and a few spaces in between. But not one that will do metal well.

Specs I am looking for
25.5" scale
24 Frets
Maple/Maple Neck
The least amount of pickups and controls the better
Basswood, Alder, or Ash body
Floyd Rose (or quality copy ala Schaller et. al.)

MIJ or MIA

What models/companies should I be looking at? I would prefer something that is currently in production so I can find one easily and try it out.

Thanks,
Eric

Metal enough?

Re: Looking for a Metal Guitar

Eric, you want a used Ibanez RG 550.

Thin maple/maple neck, basswood body, one of the best floating trems, and plentiful on the bay.

I really dig Ibanez RG guitars. They just feel right to me, seems alot of people don't like their necks, but I love them and can play faster on them than any others.

You may or may not like them, but make sure to at least try a few of the higher end models out.

www.ibanezrules.com -good site to check out.

Re: Looking for a Metal Guitar

I can't seem to find any of the RG 550 on line. Musiciansfriends says they are discontinued and searches are coming up with anything. I wonder how available they are? I would really like to try one before I decide to buy it.

Re: Looking for a Metal Guitar

How much would you like to spend?

I like these one's, although they may not be your style, I don't know how "metal" you want the guitar

Well the closest thing you can find new in a store is going to be either the 1570 and 2550. However, the neck will be both 1mm wider and thicker.

Put it this way, if you like the current production models, then you will love the older ones.

Re: Looking for a Metal Guitar

I really like the paul gilbert one!

I havn't decided on a price yet as I don't know my budget. I am getting some money for xmas and I think I will be selling my LP Studio because it has been out of the case about 4 times. And I already have a hard tail with humbuckers that I prefer over the LP.

I think I will want to keep it in the $1000 range and I will be looking over the new and used markets.

How is the trem on the new ones? Edge III I think?

Re: Looking for a Metal Guitar

The signature and Prestige models get the Edge Pro, and MIK models get the Edge III.

The best tremolos Ibanez ever offered are the original Edge, and the Lo Pro Edge. The Edge Pro is not a bad tremolo by any means, but most prefer the older tremolos.

I have two Ibanez with floaters and they are both Lo Pro Edges, but I prefer my PGM due to the fixed bridge.

ESP LTD MH-400
stock emgs, floyd rose, and not too expensive.

Thanks for the suggestion, but not even close to what I want.

No maple neck/fretboard and don't want mahogany body.

Has anyone played the Kramer 1984? Likes dislikes?

How about the Jackson Pro Series DK2m Dinky?
Even comes with Duncans! How is the floyd on these?

Edit: the 84 ri is only 22 frets. Well it still might be cool. I should probably keep it on the back burner as I want 24 frets.
