Looking For A New Tuner

Re: Looking For A New Tuner

I've gigged with a TU2 on 1 board and a Korg Pitchblack on the other for years. I've never had a problem with either :)

Re: Looking For A New Tuner

I've had pretty much all the popular tuners (guess I'm a tuner junkie haha) For pedalboard use and tuning between songs any of them are fine, TU-2, TU-3, Pitchblack, Turbo Tuner, Peterson StroboStomp, Planet Waves true strobe and Polytune (I've owned all of them and more but not the TU-3). Planet Waves and Polytune were my least favorite.

However for set up work and intonation the only ones I found to work real well are the Turbo Tuner and the Peterson. The TU-2 and Pitchblack are just a bit too inaccurate for intonation (at least to my ears) they have a "window" you could call it where you can turn an intonation screw just a hair making a slight audible change and it won't show any difference on them yet on the Peterson or Turbo tuner that tiny change will show getting you even closer to perfect intonation. The polytune is even worse at intonation and the planet waves is one twitchy mess so forget them for sure.

If you plan to do setups with it and use it on the board too you really can't beat the Turbo Tuner. It's worth the price and very well built.

If you want to save cash and are more worried about tuning up real quick and not absurdly accurate anal retentive intonation perfection then go with the Pitchblack.

The TU-3 may actually be better and more accurate for intonation than the Pitchblack but since I've never owned it I can't comment on that. All the others I've owned so I know what does what best.

I still stand by the Turbo Tuner being the best choice out there though for set up work and quick tuning between songs.

That looks pretty neat, - quick somebody buy one so they can tell us if it's any good!

Re: Looking For A New Tuner

I've been gigging with a TU-2 on my board for years and it is an excellent solid tuner for live use. I bought a Snark chromatic clip-on tuner (the red one) about a year ago and it is fantastic. More accurate than the TU-2 and so easy to use.

For quick tuning in a gig situation I love the TU-2. For adjusting intonation (like I did a couple of days ago when I put the Wilkinson bridge on my Tele) the Snark is much better.

Come to think of it I could probably live without the TU-2 if I always had the Snark to hand. I do take comfort in the dependability of the trusty TU-2 though.

The Snark is what I use. Love it.

Re: Looking For A New Tuner

I have been using a TU-2 every day, every set up, every gig and every session since 1999 and while not the most accurate by todays standards, not true bypass, not a strobe, not boutique pedal lover approved and not full of marshmallow pieces I have had nothing but great results out of it and trust me when I tell you I have put it through the ringer in terms of (ab)use!

The prices they go for today on the used market make them a stupid deal and IMHO a MUST have for every guitar player...maybe you want or need a more accurate tuner or whatever but for the price of a used TU-2 I don't see how you can go wrong...

Re: Looking For A New Tuner

I've had a pitchblack on my pedalboard since i've had a pedalboard. It has stayed longer than any pedal by a LONG shot. If i ever decided to "upgrade", i would go with the Turbo Tuner. However, it has always suited my needs and i've never really considered doing that. If it broke for some reason, & i had the extra $, i'd try a TT out, but i would know that the rock solid Pitchblack would be available as well.

Re: Looking For A New Tuner

The last two posts echo the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" adage that applies to tuners. I had been using a TU-12 standalone tuner running from an A/B box for the last decade, but I needed to make more room on my board, so that setup had to go. Originally I was looking at the new Peterson, but it seemed akin to velcroing a brick to my pedal board. That's when I found the Turbo Tuner, and that's where my search ended. I'm soooo in tune now, it's scary.

Are you trying to give me g.a.s. for a Turbo Tuner!? Haha!

Re: Looking For A New Tuner

I got a Snark for Xmas, and it's great for quick tune ups.

I had a Korg DT10 for years that I gigged with, and I'd still have it today if it didn't fry along with my DC Brick right before a show. I have the Polytune now, but I'd rather have a Pitchblack. Or now a Turbo Tuner.

Re: Looking For A New Tuner

I'll say "Just get a Snark". About $15. Very accurate and easy to use. Clip it on the peghead. The display screen is clear, colorful and easy to orient and to read. And you're not staring at the floor trying to read a tuner down at your feet. The Snark picks up the vibrations directly from your guitar. You can get them with a little mic but I own four and my wife owns one and we purchased the version without a mic. Isn't in the audio circuit so it doesn't add anything unwanted to the electrical path so "true bypass" isn't even a concern. It's the easiest to use and easiest to read tuner I've ever owned.

Re: Looking For A New Tuner

Just snagged a Snark SN-8 off of Ebay for $15 shipped!

I've been reading nothing but good about them!

Best thing about it is...if i like it as well as the Pitchblack...i have another spot for a pedal on my board!!! :headbang: :naughty: :cool2: :headbang:

Re: Looking For A New Tuner

Those Snarks are great tuners! But I still don't think mine will replace a good pedal tuner on my board. I use my Snark with my acoustic a lot or just around the house when I'm practicing. But for gigs and playing live I will always choose a pedal tuner (my Boss TU-2). The Snarks are really nice though.

I considered this, actually, but with shipping from the US it works out just a little less than I could get a brand new Pitch Black for, and if I'm spending that kinda money I'd rather go with the Korg.

Thanks everyone for their input. It's been a really interesting thread. :beerchug: :)

No, in a double twist of reversed reverse psychology, I was trying to steer you toward a Snark. And look what happened.

You don't want a Turbo Tuner. You've got too many tuners already.

Re: Looking For A New Tuner

You don't need a tuner.

Invest in a Fryette Valvulator.

Ok.

That has nothing to do with this thread. I'm sorry. I just picked one up and you should too.

Seriously.

Get the Boss TU-2 already!
