Looking to upgrade 57/57 classic plus combo

Re: Looking to upgrade 57/57 classic plus combo

the brobucker is not rounded for me at all. it's very clear even with the wound strings. the tone detail from the strings is like no other.

Do Brobuckers have unbalanced coils? I don't remember. If so, they'll have a sharp high-end.

yes the brobuckers have a slight imbalance with the coils. i wouldn't call it sharp. it extracts every ounce of tone from the guitar and doesn't colour it.

Maybe I'm off base, but I've had great luck with my 1977 Custom and the stock T-Tops.

That said, I love BB1&2 (2 LPs) and the BB Pros (1 LP).

Never really gave 57's a chance when I had some, and never tried A2Pros or Seths.

After BB's, '57's probably would have been a let down. The high-end in the neck and bridge is pretty rounded and dull. Seth's and A2P's on the other hand, are the best-sounding of Duncan's PAF-type HB's. You owe it to yourself to try a pair of Seth's in an LP. That's the world's standard for PAF's, very few others can equal them.

Right now, I'm leaning towards getting a BB1 for the neck and keeping the 57 classic plus in the bridge. I think I'll see how that works out. If I don't like the bridge after that, I can do some more swapping. I like what I'm hearing on clips of the BB1 in the neck position, I think that is what I'm looking for, some bite in the neck which is really lacking with a 57.

The Seth Lovers are intriguing as well, but are a little more expensive. I might try those if I'm not happy with the BB1.

BB1's are very good neck HB's. Good choice. I'd keep that and look for a deal on a used Seth for the bridge (and sell teh '57). It'll be a big improvement.

Re: Looking to upgrade 57/57 classic plus combo

I had decent luck with dropping the pickup and bringing the pole pieces up on the plain strings with my 57. Since you said that doesn't work, I have a Jazz in the neck of a mahogany tele that has the same pole piece arrangement as my 57s and it sounds very articulate. Out of everything suggested, I would try a Seth, there is a neck version in the trading post, $60 is well worth the risk and you can always flip it to get your money back if you don't like it.

Re: Looking to upgrade 57/57 classic plus combo

Just as an update to this thread - I installed a Burstbucker 1 in the neck position, and have tested it a bit. To my ears, there does not appear to be much difference in high end bite and articulation between the Burstbucker 1 and the 57 classic with a swapped alnico 5 magnet. Maybe a slight improvement, but not that much difference. I am yearning for more bite and sustain in the neck position.

So now I'm thinking of trying the Slash set. The neck position seems to be a real strong suit with that set.

I also am thinking of upgrading the caps and changing the wiring to 50s style wiring for a little more open top end and better tone control.

Re: Looking to upgrade 57/57 classic plus combo

Hi everybody,

you can't put 2 gallons in one gallon right?!

Gibson 59 are Alnico V magnets and 57 are Alnico II magnets.

A5 are bright with deep bass, balanced and powerful
A2 are warm with deep bass but lack of power and highs.

you wanna change that you need to work either on your pots or your caps.

Another option are Dimarzio PUs, there are so many different types they offer a
huge flexibility in sounds for different tastes...;)
