low resale!!!!!

ok so I snagged a beautiful quilt top les paul-style guitar from ebay for 650 dollars w/ shipping... it's a Yamaha AES 920 in honeyburst.. it has a REAL quilt maple cap (with the natural sides instead of binding so you can see the top.. love that PRS style stuff) and a REAL african mahogany back and neck, with dual seymour 59's... it retails for 1,500 dollars new (and that's the sale price, not the higher list price) and is made in Japan... being a previous Epi les paul player I'm not used to this kind of resonance and warmth of tone (when I bought my Epi les paul blue quilt top I actually assumed it was a maple TOP and not just a veneer, same goes with the "mahogany back")

so besides just bragging about this lucky find I want to get some clues on other high-end guitars with low resale values.. if you have any insight, what are some quality guitars which you're pretty much screwed if you buy new (and don't plan on keeping it) and a winner if you buy used.. I'm sure there has to be at least one model Gibby les paul to enter this category

Re: low resale!!!!!

Nice score on that AES . . . they are very underrated guitars in my opinion. I very nearly bought one last year . . .

Re: low resale!!!!!

Ernie Ball Axis Sports with P-90s.

They sell for $500-$700 all day long.

Yeah, but how do they sound?

When i think P-90's I tend not to think of Ernie Ball Axis construction.

yes you're exactly right.. good call!... "music man" and "ernier ball" are one in the same right?.. if I were to spring for an Axis I'd want one with the carved maple top, floyd bridge w/ d-tuner, and dual zebra humbuckers... which is I guess why the p-90 versions don't sell for as much.. so do any of the Axis guitars come with a set-neck or are they all bolts?

They have ash bodies and maple/maple or maple/rosewood necks. Construction is not much different from a Tele with a P-90 or a hummer...only better wood and construction methods.

Re: low resale!!!!!

how well do carvin's and higher-end peaveys (like the EVH ones) fare in the used market?

Carvin's take a dump in the used market pretty viciously. They tend to hang around on CraigsList until they drop below a few hundred and someone buys it out of pity or they go to eBay and get hosed.

Re: low resale!!!!!

I'm digging the Music Man Axis guitars.. but two things bother me about them: they only come in flat tops and the locking trem only goes down in pitch... the peavey wolfgangs have carved tops and have double-locking trems that even have a D-tuner.. so that solves both problems.. they have really low resale values too

One of my fave "Idiots at GC" stories involve someone coming in with one of the flat-tops and them putting together a number for the archtop on trade-in with it. Then he ended up heming and hawing so they threw another hundred or so on top of the value to help him out.

At the end they ended up giving him more on the trade-in than they would of paid for the guitar new.

You do realize that the trem used on the trem-equipped Axis is also double-locking. Double-locking means that you lock the strings at the nut AND bridge. The Wolfgang is the same way, so is the OFR, FRII, FR Pro, Edge..etc. The trem route on the Wolfgang is also divebomb only. It's just recess routed a little so the trem plate sits down in to the body, at least on the archtop models. The flat top Wolfies have it sitting flush on the body.

The double-locking trem-equipped Axis models have an excellent resale value. In mint condition they can go for damn near what they cost new. An EVH Sig model EBMM goes for more than what they cost new. Give it time for the Wolfgangs. Some models will go up, some will go down.

90's Fender Strats and Teles are a good buy right now.

+1! I like the "lake of fire", Hades, magma/lava look of the color and tones of the top. I am usually not the a big fan of quilt.

Re: low resale!!!!!

You'd have some fun using the D-tuna if the trem was floating!! :laugh2:
lmao.. and thanks for making me realize how uninformed I am when it comes to locking trems.. and just out of curiosity.. are there any other non-locking trems besides Bigsby's that go down AND up in pitch?

thanks man.. I really need the affirmation because I always wanted this guitar except in charcoal grey.. I think the charcoal grey finish really set off the chrome hardware but it doesn't have as much stage presence as the one I bought.. I guess I decided to go wild after being tired of having guitars that only look great up close and get over-looked when they're on stage
