Re: lp standards vs. custom?
Agreed. My current guitar is a 1995/1996 Heritage HC150 Les Paul standard "copy" and at the time I bought it, it was a considerably better built and better sounding guitar than 99% of the Gibsons of the day.The "flame" maple woodgrain and the Cherry Sunburst was considerably prettier than what Gibson offered on the standards (even the reissues), had a better neck profile (didn't have the option back then except on the "reissue"s) has grover tuners, better/heavier tune-o-matic for sustain(schaller IIRC), and Duncan 59 pickups. List I think at the time was around $1600, and the tag said 9-something. A Les Paul standard was slightly less expensive at the time, but not much less...75 bucks or so, and the tuners were horrible, and pickups were ...ehhh.
That said, I don't dislike Gibsons at all, just agree that the Heritage is a great buy. It sounds/feels/plays/is built the same or better in my experience. I haven't messed around with the newer Gibsons so I cannot say how they compare today tho.
Luke Duke said:...if you don't HAVE to have the gibson name on the headstock check into some heritages made in the old gibson plant by the ex-gibson employees. Honestly I think they are on par with the high dollar gibson's.
