Mahogany Strat body -- anybody tried one?

I'm thinking that would give some oomph to vintage flavored single coils without having to overwind them much. Anybody done a Warmoth or other frankenstrat with a mahogany body?

Re: Mahogany Strat body -- anybody tried one?

Well I just ordered a black korina body from Warmoth. Black korina is just slightly brighter than mahogany and am trying to decide between a Trembucker JB and a Full Shred for the bridge pickup. Leaning toward the JB. Frank Gambale's signature Yamaha is mahagony with a JB and it sounds great. But then again, he could probably make any guitar sound great.

Oops, didn't realize you wanted old style Strat sound. Sorry.

It's all still relevant. The principle is the same, adding some girth to a bright pickup. I have an LP Special with P90's that makes even 7.1k neck-90's sound boomy, so I'm figuring a slab of mahogany maybe not quite that heavy sounding might give a little SRV beef to some 6k Strat pu's.

Remember the spring cavity and bridge route make a dirrenece in tone. I tried the Fender mahogany HSS strat back to back with an SG standard and was surprised at the similarities. The highs seemed snappy, but not ice-picky. The mids were prominent, and juicy. The main difference was in the lows. The strat seemed a lot tighter and more focused in the bass/low mid area. I think a SSS mahogany strat would be cool, but I'd preffer a maple or ebony 'board on it if it were me.

It's the best! ...at least to my ears. I have a Hamer Chaparral that is a solid one peice M body, and a Charvel Model A Plus which is an M body with a 1/8" quilt maple top. Both have bolt on maple necks and ebony fretboards. The Hamer is very dark sounding, in a very menacing way. The Charvel has brighter pups and has some serious LP tone with more definition.
