Making a Gibson SG sound HUGE!

Re: Making a Gibson SG sound HUGE!

Hey there!!!

Title says it all! I like SG's, but I'd like to make mine sound a bit bigger, fuller, especially while on the bridge pickup. 498T doesn't do it to me.

I already settled on a neck '59, no hesitation.

I'm divided between the SH-5 Custom or Sh-14. I still want my guitar to sound Gibson-like, if makes sense. No 16/18 kohms pickups. For that purpose, sh-5 and sh-14 seem spot on.

Anybody with those pickups in their SG's? Do I aim right for wnat I need?

Cheers

In that case, look into the Gibbo BB3 :cool2:

I know it's just a sample... but the Sh-5 Custom sound sample on SD website sound so thin, while people keep sayin' sh-5 has a great huge bottom end.

My first choice was indeed on the Custom but after a while I leaned toward Custom5.

Total indecision.

People here say the samples aren't particularly representative of the PU's. There's far too many guitar designs, woods, amps, and speakers to think you can cover all that with one clip. No one with experience uses them. They're there for newbies, and then often create more confusion and wrong assumptions than anything else.

Re: Making a Gibson SG sound HUGE!

The DC was too thin in my SG.

That thing needs a LP or better a Flying V, IMHO.

Re: Making a Gibson SG sound HUGE!

Gibson BB3 or Gibson Angus Young Signature could be what you are looking for.
I have the '59n/AYSignature on my Les Paul and it really sounds huge.
I know someone that sadly copied me with this combo and put it in his SG standard, and it REALLY sounds huge, he also wired the AY in parallel with a push/pull, that makes the guitar extremely versatile.

Another pick up you might want to look into is the Tony Iommi sig bucker from Gibson.
Slightly less out put than the DirtyFingers model.

The percentage of happy owners doesn't seem to be quite as high as some other PU's. JB's are hit-or-miss in mahogany, whereas the Custom family usually does very well in that wood.

I don't know... you could be right, but I'm not sure. There are so many in the market as compared to other pickups that it may SEEM that way, but I would guess that the reason you see so many for sale is because there are 3-times (guess) as many in the market.

The same can be said for anything. For example, there are a ton more of used Honda Accords for sale than, say Madza 3s. Is that because people don't like them, or because there are so many more in the market than the other vehicle?

Another vote for the Custom. I've got one in the bridge of an SG-like guitar (mahogany body, mahogany neck, rosewood board, stopbar/tom, but it's neckthrough, not set-neck), and it has plenty of low end.

However, "plenty" for me is "not enough" for someone else, and "boomy" for yet another.

Funny you should mention those two cars.

Over here it is just the other way 'tound.
Honda's are NOT big/popular over here.

Mazda deff out sell the Honda on this side of the world, and is cheaper than Honda too ;)

bridge: DIRTY FINGERS. PEARLY GATES w/ A8 swap. SETH LOVER A8. OLD PAFS A8. MAXON SUPER 70/ SMITS ULTRA 7T.

Re: Making a Gibson SG sound HUGE!

I put a Rio Grande BBQ into an SG and it sounded MASSIVE. Really thick and crunchy, but not in a heavy metal way. Sounded just like Angus Young on the early 90s AC/DC Live record.

Re: Making a Gibson SG sound HUGE!

Will Custom Custom/Pearly Gates work in a SG? Should I change the volume pots to 500k for best results regardless of humbucker?

Didn't try. Sold the SG :) The only SG I have has a single P90 dogear.

I don't think waking humbuckers in a SG up even more is the way to go, I'd leave the 300s.

Re: Making a Gibson SG sound HUGE!

for the bridge pickup, try a JB with an alnico 8 or alnico 9 - it'll blow doors down. I keep switching between the a8 and a9 and i think i like the a9 better - it's brighter.

Re: Making a Gibson SG sound HUGE!

Custom 8 in that sg. itll do anything you want. either a 59 or jazz in the neck. or a 59/jazz hybrid in the neck. youll make that guitar sound amazing with that combo..

I didn't see anywhere in this thread where it said what amp you are using. I point this out because my stock SG through my Marshall JCM900 sounded weaker than my Les Paul, but when I put the SG through a JTM45 or a Fender '57 Twin (which have tube rectifiers) it sounded much fatter with the treble pickup, but still Gibson. Rolling back the bass on the Fender actually got a Marshall tone but still thick for the SG. I realize you seem hooked on doing a pickup swap, but I just want to point this out because I think it's good for all of us to recognize there are other factors. So if you are tone chasing, you might not want to rule out other options to get there. From my experience, having a tunnel vision on one kind of solution might make you miss that golden tone you are after.
