After saving my allowance for a year i bought a Mim strat. Ive learned Money For Nothing, But i can't get the right tone, Any help? What type of pedals should i use. I have a zoom gx1on multi effects pedal, so the correct pedal isn't an issue, i just need to know which ones to use.

Re: Mark Knopfler Money For Nothing?

to be honest to me it sounds like a cocked wah, but I don't know what he actually uses

Re: Mark Knopfler Money For Nothing?

Huh.... I never thought of leaving a way half cocked, Ill have to screw around with that.

Re: Mark Knopfler Money For Nothing?

I always thought Money for Nothing was a departure for him, Les Paul into wah into Marshall.

Re: Mark Knopfler Money For Nothing?

According to an interview in Guitar Player magazine way back in the day, Mark was trying to replicate the fat, grinding tone of Billy Gibbons' Les Paul. So.... you start with a Les Paul and a whole mess of amps on 10. Remember the video? Both guys were playing LP's.

Re: Mark Knopfler Money For Nothing?

I feel like my Burstbucker-loaded Epi LP gets me close. Into a Marshall. The harmonic content from the asymmetrical winds is similar to a cocked wah, but I don't know what Mark actually used.

Re: Mark Knopfler Money For Nothing?

pretty weird tone & riff. is it all finger-picked? Is there some good tab or youtube lesson vid you used?

According to the all-reliable internet, it turns out in the studio it was a trick of mic placement, combining multiple mics at the desk. Live he used a wah replicate it.

I can't tell you how to get that tone with your Zoom & I'm not even 100% sure how Mark gets it (Likely a cocked Wah) but I can tell you how I get it???

Step one- Buy at least one Wampler Clarksdale, I've got two but that's just because I'm awesome, LOL!!!

Step two- Turn the Mid knob all the way up on said Wampler Clarksdale...

Step three- Use your pot & when that doesn't work try your tone pot...

LOL, I know nothing I've said here today will help you in the least, not unless you want to go out and drop another $150-$200 on a new pedal anyway, but it was still kinda fun!!!

Just use your tone knobs, try cocking a Wah, & experiment, you'll get there eventually.....

Re: Mark Knopfler Money For Nothing?

I read Money For Nothing, but in my head I thought Sultans of Swing. I was struggling to figure out why anyone would think that was a cocked wah until PFD mentioned the LP > Marshall combo. Then it clicked.

Re: Mark Knopfler Money For Nothing?

Honestly, the biggest part of Knopflers tone, including money for nothing especially, is his way of fingerpicking. You can't replicate that with any gear, it's technique.

Yes. It didn't start to happen for me until I fingerpicked the part.

Re: Mark Knopfler Money For Nothing?

Anyone else here see him years back on that PBS special with Chet Atkins and friends? great stuff!

Re: Mark Knopfler Money For Nothing?

Depending on the guitar I'm playing, when I play "Money for Nothing" I use both pups with the phase reversed and then roll the tone down just a touch... it gives a pretty reasonable facsimile of the tone. If I'm playing it on a guitar that doesn't have a phase reverse I go with cocked wah, but it's a little harsher tone.

Re: Mark Knopfler Money For Nothing?

True, I could see the Jimmy Page wiring with all knobs pulled and a little volume/tone manipulation to get you close.
