Re: Marshall 1987x

so the 50 watt 1987x is too loud compared to....? do you mean that it stays clean and bright until the volume is around 7, say?

It has two volume levels...off, and LOUD :laugh2: edit: It's loud compared to ANYTHING..only a couple of 100W 59s I've played, a Hiwatt, and a Marshall Major made it sound like a kitten.

You really need an attentuator if ya wanna get gain out of it at moderate volumes. And no it breaks up sooner than on 7, it's just most of the gain (on mine as well as the 2 original plexi 1987s I played) is towards the end of the dial's rotation.

i had a 50 watt jcm 800 and it fit the bill fine...volume wise. it clipped nicely around 5 on the dial....if i remember correctly.

the thing is, when i'm practicing at low volumes i like to have a clear jangly tone. my fender amp just doesn't ring chords out like i'm used to. the marshall took everything i threw at it.

Re: Marshall 1987x

I rarely had mine anything but balls to the wall...brought the volume down with a power-brake. It has nice cleans, better than an 2203/4,IMO but you really should go play one and let your ears make the decision :bigthumb:

better cleans than the jcm 800's eh? i may have to plug into one at the store to hear.

thanks everyone.

Re: Marshall 1987x

Everyone i know that has used these Plexi reissues tell me that once the volume is up around 4 it does not get any louder.... it just seems to distort more... But i hear they will take your head off getting them goosed!

yeah the jcm 800 roared like a constipated grizzly bear when it was cranked. it was the most fierce 50 watts i've heard. i figure the plexi reissues should have similar mannerisms.

Re: Marshall 1987x

I own an early 80's 50 watt 800 head and my god can that sucker gets loud.... It must be the freq's it gives out as my 5150 which is 120 watts does not seem as loud until you really open it!!! Something about the Marshall sound that makes it seem so much louder.... I could not imagine standing in front of old Marshall and Hiwatt stacks for too long..

marshalls are great because they amplify everything you feed it 100%. some amps just soak up the tone and get muddy. i think it come back to basic circuit design and good components. complicated amps just don't do it for me.

Re: Marshall 1987x

people talk about an amp not getting louder after a certain point, just nastier, but the Marshalls definately do that. It is most noticable on the JTM 45's. I had an early model back a few years ago and that think literally hit max volume at about 7 and just SAGGED after that. I had a silverface Bandmaster cab with Pyle speakers of all things and it was a monster!!!! But it gave me tinitis in my left ear from playing it a small bedroom. I sold it and a month later, Marshall introduced the Power Brake:smack:

Re: Marshall 1987x

I've used a friend's 1987 at a few jam sessions, primarily blues rock and late 70s/early 80s style hard rock. A decent clean sound for those styles, and I used a RI Maxon 808 OD for crunch. It took very well to that pedal. I've also heard people use RI TS 9 Tube screamers w/them. Took well to that also, a very nice crunch. All these incidents utilized Marshall RI GB loaded 4x12 cabs.

I used a 50 watt JCM 800 into a Sonic 4x12 for a few years in a a hard rock/punk rock outfit. The Sonic cab had what were the current Celestion "modern" rock spkrs, 70 watts (I don' remember the designation).
That, IMHO, is a great rig for hard rock (whatever that is!). But, if you would require some footswitchable clean/od stuff, a 1987 with a decent OD pedal might be the way to go. The 800 has only one channel. But, it sure is ggod! And, if you could get away w/reaching back to the amp, and tweaking the drive and clean, well, then, what the heck! Good luck!:smokin:
