Marshall 9100 power amp score!

Just pickup up a Marshall 9100 power amp to run the GT-8 through! That's 2x 50 watt 5881 valve powered channels :banana:

First impressions were:
It's not as loud as I thought, but I think it works in my favour as I can get the tubes cookin by the time it gets loud. This makes it great to use at home too.

The voicing switches are great for taking you from middy rock to sharp metal. The prescence knobs are best all the way down...but I might eq all the prescence out of my preamp so I can have instant control from the power amp.

I'm going to put it in for a service this weekend as it had been stored for a long time. It's likely it will need retubing.

It's also a bit buzzy in the highs... are there any brands of 5881 tubes that can tame the highs? Or is it just that my ears aren't used to the new amp?

Dont forget that the highs could be more than just the poweramp.


Your position in relation to the cab when up high makes a huge difference to how it will sound, same goes for the room you use it in, having gigged around with my amps a lot (and experience with that poweramp using a marshall jmp-1, also experience with a 20/20) i can tell you that some gigs il run the presence up on about 6-7 where as other gigs i find myself turning it down to almost 0, the room you are in makes a Huge huge difference.

You was using a GT-8 into your peavey and then to the cab before?


Maybe you need to adjust your sound patches on your GT-8, now you're using a different poweramp, make sure you arent running speaker emulation type stuff, if you are then try turning it off.


Anyway, good luck, throw some JJ's in there mmmm.

Yeh that was my setup.

I already had a mess around with my settings, but came to the conclusion that it was the power amp giving it the buzz, because even with less highs & prescence and even a high cut it still had the same sort of sound.

Ok well now starts my conquest for perfect tubes

Cool score. How much did you pick it up for?

I recently got a Peavey Classic 50/50 power amp for $700 and it works great for my Yamaha DG-stomp, although it's primary use is for my Mesa Quad pre amp. I set the presence around 12 o'clock.

That Soldano power amp I made that thread recently went for a great price also at $699. Makes me wonder if I should of opted for the Soldano instead of the Peavey, as my Quad Pre is designed around 6L6 output tubes.

That soldano was a great price, but I got this one for $400AU with a rack case!

I was always on the lookout for a classic 50/50 but none ever came up.

Have you ever had yours serviced and retubed?? The local guy here (it's been said he's too expensive :27: ) reckons between $80-120 AU for a clean out and service (my amp is very dusty) and around $200 for a set of 4 new power tubes.

I would do it myself but I'm not sure I'd be able to bias the amp.

$400!!! That's an absolute steal. I see them usually go for around $1000 on ebay. Congrats on such a find.

I'm not quite sure when the last time the Peavey 50/50 was serviced or re-tubed. Only just received it from the previous owner a few days ago. I haven't even opened it up yet. It's got JJ EL84's inside. So far it sounds fine and works as though it should be. Loud and clear. Hard to say if it's in its best sounding condition considering I don't have any other experience with rackmount power amps to compare it to. I'm still wondering if a Mesa 50/50 would be a noticable improvement to match with my Mesa Quad pre.

I can say with great confidence that plugging a pre into a dedicated power amp is uter bliss compared going into the effects return of even a valve combo or head. Even my Yamaha DG-stomp sounds MUCH better than before.

I'm trying out a Classic 50/50 also to use as a power amp for my Line 6 AX2. It really makes that digital stuff sound good... I'm hoping the shop will take my JMP-1 as payment for the 50/50 as the AX2 does everything I want now that I'm getting juicy tube power tone through my cabs...
