basically most everything has already been said correctly . The late 60's early 70's marshal;ls that Jim Marshall made in the image of the Grail Bassman Fender circuit are some of the greatest sounding amps ever. Yeah, they need to be cranked.
Also, the later 70's and 80's JMPS/JCM's are excellent amps, and they do have master volumes. Certainly the more you crank them the betetr they do sound, but they sound great at moderate volume with the master volume preamp circuit father Marshall invented.
There are otehr great marshalls, like the new JVM.
Basically Marhsall was never a mil spec built amp like Hiwatt, but the Transformers are qaulity, and even the later non point to point circuitboard amps wrere very well made wiht thick boards, good traces, jacks on the chassis and great engineering and tone.
These days there are many many boutique builders that can build a replica point to point Plexi amp.
There are also some amp makers like Soldano building hot rod mil-spec amps that do everything as Marsahll can do and more.
I think someone said nothing sounds like a Marshall, and thats mainly true but there are a few that do... there are so many other great new amps being made now since back in the day when Marshll as the ONLY amp for rock.
So you've got to respect the legacy, but keep an open mind to new possibilites.

Haha I really don't mean anything personal about that. It's just in my head whenever I think of the typical guitar/rock snob they usually have a British accent. I think because we have a local theater which many performers in the summer are British so I see them out at the bars complaining about the beer these "quaint small towns". Still dont understand the warm beer thing, sorry dude.

to me its the sound of rock guitar. there are many other options out there and almost all of them sound good or great. but there is something about the voice of a marshall that, to me, just sounds right.

That's a good enough reason to start a thread I guess. Well you have it from a whole bunch of non-endorsees now. It's not hype to quite a few of us. To me, though there are several amps out there that can get that tone now, Marshall invented that sound and Marshall amps are the simplest way to get that sound. Of course, owning a real deal JTM-45 or Plexi isn't gonna be cheap, so some of us went other routes to achieve that sound without actually buying one of those amps. Lots of good boutique makers out there building amps with better components and just a little more love than Marshall currently is.

The old school Marshalls are worthy (plexi, JMP, JCM800....)
I think some of the new(er) marshalls are crap (MG, MA, JMD)
Some of the new(er) ones are very worthy though (JVM, Vintage Modern)

I've owned my fair share of Marshalls, plus some one else's fair share too:
a JMP 2204, four JCM800 2204s, two JCM800 2203s, a 1987xl, a 30th Anniversary 6100, a JMP-1 preamp and the Randy Rhoads Signature.
I actually feel like I'm cheating when I think about using a different head. Combos are a different thing, as I've got a Fender and a Line 6 and I'm ok with them, but I can't bring myself to buy the Engl Fireball that I love the tone of because it's not a Marshall.
To me, Marshall has become my voice, so in my mind, there is no hype, there is pure tone and then there is everything else.

Old Marshalls (JCM800's on backwards) are big old unruly warhorse amps that are kind of hard to control but they yield rock and old school metal tones that are hard to beat without going boutique. They're like Levi's 501's and Chuck Taylors - not for everyone but identifiable, classic, and cool.
I've only played one 900 that I really liked. It was OK. The DSLs were a little better IMO. I've heard people get neat sounds out of a Mode 4 and I'd like to try the 400W cab if I can find one. I didn't like the Vintage Modern at all and the JVM's are just so-so to me. I can't get down with the Haze amps or any of the current crop of AVT and MG stuff.
That's not a real Marshall to me. The vintage reissues are cool, though. Not as cool as the real deal but they get close enough without having to sell a kidney.
Dave Friedman's Marsha amp is the best Marshall-based amp I've ever heard. They're pretty incredible.

It's not supposed to be warm! It's supposed to be cellar temperature (~12C) rather than fridge temperature (~5C). That's not warm, it's perfect drinking temperature. Although you might want most lagers cooler so you can't taste their terribleness so much.

12C ( ~53 Deg F) is much too warm for any beer. How can the beer quench someones thirst at that temperature? Beer just leaves a very stale taste when its that warm, not refreshing.
I'm not bashing on Marshall, I'm just saying companies like Splawn does it better.
