Re: Marshall amps hype or truly worthy?

I'm not bashing on Marshall, I'm just saying companies like Splawn does it better.

Splawn wouldn't have anything to "do better" if Marshall didn't exist.

I've never tried a Splawn, as I've never been in the same room with one. I would like to tho!

And Marshall wouldn't have anything to do if not for Fender and the Vaccum Tube wouldn't exist if not for Edison. How far back are we going? Like i said a lot of companes owe Marshall but I see companies taking it to the next level and marshall isn't anymore. Just an honest observation. If you like it fine. I believe the whole premis of the thread is are Marshalls Hype. No they're not Hype, they have a role to play in rock music but I'm just not a huge fan of them. I feel there are amps that are better for what I do.

Re: Marshall amps hype or truly worthy?

Werent the earliest marshalls fender bassman copies or something like that??

For me, personally, there is nothing like a good marshall behind you

Re: Marshall amps hype or truly worthy?

yeah something like that. A bassman with british tubes... a few other changes I think. Is that what the JTM45 is? I'm not a historian so don't kill me if I'm wrong.

Re: Marshall amps hype or truly worthy?

I'm a big fan of good Marshalls, and if you look at all the true guitar greats, they've all used them....for British EL-34 tone at least.

But my ultimate conclusion is that Reinhold Bogner grabbed the torch and ran with it, and his dream is what I always chased. So for me, Bogner is the amp company I'm totally happy with. In a perfect world, I'd own every single one of them. My XTC, a Metropolis, Duende Seco Mojado, Shiva....all of them. I would be 100% happy if all I owned for amps was the entirely expensive Bogner line.

I felt exactly the same way as you... until after I got my Shiva (and Fender TRRI).

Don't get me wrong... I LOVE the Shiva. And the TRRI. That's why I now really find myself wanting to get "the original" in terms of great OD amps. Cause the Shiva does both. And the Fender does just Fender. So I want to get a Marshall again to do just Marshall. Will be a plexi for me. So I'll have the two originals, and then the new generation hybrid. Will continue to gig the Bogner, and just have the Fender and Marshall for recording and special gigs.

But I'd STILL love to have an XTC, Metro, and Duende. :)

They are very close to each other indeed. There are significant differences, but those differences are few.

Re: Marshall amps hype or truly worthy?

If any UK bod wants a vintage Marshall JMP 100w head I have for sale, pm me. (I'll put it in the trade section soon as I get around to taking pics)
I stopped using my Marshall a while ago as I could get just as good a sound from my Tech 21 which took up less room and was easier to carry. But I think Marshall do a good job, they produce a product that does what they advertise it as doing and so on. Quality is always good. If you want a big valve sound they can't go wrong with a Marshall.

Re: Marshall amps hype or truly worthy?

12C ( ~53 Deg F) is much too warm for any beer. How can the beer quench someones thirst at that temperature? Beer just leaves a very stale taste when its that warm, not refreshing.

You're drinking the wrong kind of beer then dude.

You can't tell me the first thing you want to drink on a hot day is a 12C (53 deg F) temp beer. How is that in any way refrshing? Warm beer is designated for crappy college frat parties.

Re: Marshall amps hype or truly worthy?

You can obviously tell where Jim Marshall got his influence-- like Leo he was an enterprising soul who was trying to solve manufacturing problems and give his customers what they wanted- in this case great sounding amps but without the horrible lack of availability and high cost of USA Fenders at the time. Of course they had to change some things due to parts/tube availability- and then things progressed from there as the "new sound" came about.

You can def hear the foundation of "classic marshall" tone in this 59RI (which is not modded, and no goose-if you've ever played a dimed Bassman, you know what they are capable of)

Well not the first thing, I'll leave it 'til the afternoon at least but it's good.

Re: Marshall amps hype or truly worthy?

I like classic Marshall tone because it seems to work with my style and most of my favorite guitarists play through them.
My 1987x reissue isn't the most desired amp but I really like it with greenbacks and classic lead 80s, using a classic Les Paul with Duncans :D Several forum members have played through it and they seemed to have fun too.
I've also owned a 79 JMP 50w and a 1980s JCM800 100w. Both great amps for what they do.

Re: Marshall amps hype or truly worthy?

I am 39.
For the longest time I was against using marshalls. I think a lot of it was because it was what everybody was doing, it seemed to be pushed in my face so much. That and a guitarist friend of mine talked about how he went in and bought a marshall stack and the sales guy warned him not to. He said it sounded good but just wasnt useful.

Fast forward and I finally realized the tone I wanted was all marshall. It was what I grew up hearing. It was THE tone I wanted. Stopped worrying about anything else but getting the tone I wanted.
JTM45 / 1959 / plexi / jcm800

I ended up with a jet city, but it sounds like a marshall............

Re: Marshall amps hype or truly worthy?

I don't think the question is phrased quite well enough for me to actually vote, but...

I think of Marshall amps as the ultimate one trick ponies. They do a handful of things, but damn, do they do those things better than anything else.

So, I think they are great...but I also think that their popularity is somewhat baffling, given what they actually sound like. I don't find them to be good general-purpose amps.

Re: Marshall amps hype or truly worthy?

The last really good Marshall I owned was a Studio 15. 2 x 6v6 tubes in the power stage. Great sounding amp. I gigged it for about 3 years and rarely got to crank it all the way even at only 15 watts. I had a 900 Dual Master combo on loan for a while and found it usable but totally unremarkable. Jubilee combo was a little better but, again, a bit dull. I used a Slash model Jubilee half stack at a rehearsal recently and had to use my Blackstar Drive pedal to get a decent lead sound out of it.

I'm currently using a Cornford combo which is definitely in Marshall territory but just BETTER.

There's nothing in the current modern Marshall line that interests me at all. Too many channels/modes.

If they built a simple classic voice two channel combo with both channels voiced the same but with a little more gain available on the lead channel I would check it out.

When Marshall get it right - it's very good indeed.

Re: Marshall amps hype or truly worthy?

For what its worth I think Marshall's provide a go to sound that many rock bands are after. In my case; a few years ago I was playing in a classic rock band & the sound I needed was my Marshall 900. It was a great amp & it served me well. When that band dissolved I formed a blues band(it took over 3 years). The Marshall just wasn't working. I still have it & I probably won't sell it but I find the tone I am after now requires more clarity & less drive. The Marshall doesn't give me that. I am currently using a Deluxe Reverb for my amp now. Works great & is plenty loud for most of the stuff I do.

now I also have a Bogner Shiva as well as a komet. IMHO the Komet is the BEST amp I have ever plugged into, but most of the places I play I could never use it. Way too loud. The Shiva can work due to MV but I choose to use the DR. More manageable volume. I would love to have a 20 to 30W Marshall. Haven't found one yet but i will.
