Marshall cab deal?

Hey guys! I took my Laney in for some TLC and saw they had a Marshall 4x12 cab with the price reduced to a little over $300.

I didn't catch the model number but its not one of the cheapo MG cabs. Its made in the UK and has a British flag in the bottom right but in gray tones. The tolex color was a bit different too, more of a smokey color than the usual black. I remember the model tag saying 900 or something. Its loaded with the non cheapy celestions

Anyone familiar with what cab this might be and is it a good deal? my other option is to pay to have my 80's Crate 4x12 fixed which possibly means all new speakers (i'd probably go with eminence) and would probably cost way more overall :banghead:

Re: Marshall cab deal?

It sounds like a JCM 900 cab. Should have a plate at the bottom left that says JCM 900, a gold colored plate. If it is in decent shape then $300 is a pretty decent deal, as new similar cabs run close to a grand. You can have the grillcloth changed fairly cheaply if you don't like it; that's what I did to mine.

Hmm yeah i was thinking its one of those, but perhaps it was paired with some limited edition head? Instead of a jcm900 plate in the bottom left it had the gray tone brit flag in the bottom right and the tolex was like a smokey black. I guess i'll snap some pics next time if they let me

Re: Marshall cab deal?

Maybe a marshall 1960ax? Those cabs are $1100 or so new

Re: Marshall cab deal?

what makes them so special to warrant that cost?

Probably mostly the eight white letters on the front.

EDIT: I know absolutely nothing about that cab, I'm just being cynical.

I'm probably right, though...

Re: Marshall cab deal?

If it was in fact a 1960AX for $300 I would have immediately slapped my credit card on the counter.

On a side note, I current have a line on a used Vintage Modern 4x12 for a tasty price. Been wanting a Greenback loaded cab for a while now.

Re: Marshall cab deal?

i noticed that Marshall recommends using an attenuator if just one 1960AX cab is used to drive a 100watt head. Are the greenbacks really that delicate? i do like to drive it wide open...

Yeah, that way the speakers won't be pushed beyond their limits, volume wise. GB's break up fast and with a lot of volume from a 100 watt head they can get somewhat mushy and loose and unfocused. Ideally, these were sold as full stacks with a 100 watt head.
I have a 50 watt Laney head I'll be using with my GB cab, but I will also be running it with a 300 watt 1960A so two 4x12's will be going at the same time.
Regardless, I would not pass up this deal if I were you.

Love my V30 Loaded AV Cab...Usually I only play through 1 side of the cab...Just 2x12..I Like the sound of the 2x12s coming out of a large cabinet...All 4 V30s is total volume overkill...These speakers project...My cab is from 1999..

Re: Marshall cab deal?

I guess if the cab doesnt work out for me i could always flip it for a big profit towards something that can handle a cranked head on its own. I'm thinking an Emperor would do nicely

Re: Marshall cab deal?

How do you do this? This would be perfect for my needs.

It has to be a stereo/mono cab....You just set the switch for stereo and just only plug into one side(one jack) on the speaker cab...This only allows 2 of the speakers to play...You have to have the mono/stereo capability to do this...You then set your amp head for 8 ohms...This cab is set up for stereo both sides at 8 ohms...Or Mono 4 or 16 ohms...Makes for a versatile cab setup...You could also run 2 seperate heads into each 8 ohm side of the 4x12 cab....Hence the hefty price tag on this cab...Around a $900 cab new now..Notice the 8 ohm left and 8 ohm right designations for the stereo scenario...

Re: Marshall cab deal?

Snap it up, that's a steal... infact you're gloss should be Dick Turpin if you get it for $300.

Re: Marshall cab deal?

The stereo option is nice, but I don't think the 1960AX/AC cabs have stereo capability. The GB loaded VM 425 cab does though.
