Marshall DSL or JCM800 for Metal / Thrash / Punk?

Re: Marshall DSL or JCM800 for Metal / Thrash / Punk?

I prefer the 2203/2204 800s but the DSLs are fine amps.

You gonna join a metal band?

I've been playing with a couple of Metal bands, and I do have 3 gigs coming up with a punk band

Dude, these are some awesome amps you have been asking about. My personal all time fav amp is the Mark IV but I understand you are looking for the marshall type. You should check out Drucifer's "amp clips":

He may have his amps rigged for metal (ie tubes and modifications) - maybe he will give you additional info via PM

Had DSL the two channel one, giged with it for two years. Its a good amp very versitile but ... if you are into pure metal sound, like Zakk, Helloween, Accept, Judas Priest etc. You are not gonna get that tone from it, may be with the right tubes ECC83S and KT88s or mods, or maybe with modded DS-1 but it comes a little short of nailing that tone, but that's if you are a "purist" like me. Otherwise its definately JCM800 and the cleans of JCM800 more "vintagish" to me. If you can find Laney AOR you will save a ton and will not be disappointed, trust me, give it a try.

This works good for me, and I play mostly metal. I also have a pair of AOR 50's and they aren't bad either.

Very cool Olin and I was only pullin on your leg so very lightly. You actually start quite a few very interesting amp threads.

I like the DSLs quite a bit and I think (opinion) that they are probably the most versatile amps Marshall has ever released while holding on to a somewhat classic Marshall tone. The 2205/10 series were ok but they did stray quite a ways away from their older cousins. They did have more gain and arguably do have more gain than the DSLs but you do lose something in the translation. The 900s too are fine amps with more gain than the 800s and earlier amps but still at a cost tonally. There is just something that gets lost when you use SS devices to raise the gain after the first preamp tube. At least thats my opinion and Im sure there are many folks that will disagree.

My 1983 2203 vert input isnt a gain monster by any means though it does get up and hump when you crank it but it is a more fluid tone than the 1990 and later Marshalls. Compared to my Mesa rack though it is not a gain monster. The tone from the pre-1990 Marshalls was often either a result of cranking them which will cause bar owners, mothers and neighbors to instantly freak out or they were front ended with a wide variety of ODs, distortion and fuzz pedals. Front ending an amp causes a seriously different tone than using ICs or diodes to clip your signal post first stage. At least this is what I have concluded after years of playing different amps and making casual observations.

I not too long ago had my 2203 converted to EL-34s from the original 6650s and while it did seem to lose a little of the metal thing it did increase my break-up and I gained some mids and squish typical of EL-34s. I lost a little presence perhaps but gained a lot of attitude.

I don't play that amp much anymore because the Mesa rack is far more flexable and my Crate V32 is easier to move and doesn't piss off bar owners but I would never sell it. I had a guy stop by a couple of weeks ago and played through it with a Strat and my TS-9 and the tone was incredible.

It's just one of those amps you don't let go of. If my daughter ever takes up guitar, she'll have a killer rig and I'll be the coolest dad ever!

I have had a fascination with KT88s since playing VHTs at the GC.

I think I like the larger, bassier tone of the DSL over the 900 a bit more. People say the 900s are buzzy. I have heard bands play them cranked and they usually sound quite good.

I feel DSLs are well priced.

BTW THAT ORANGE DSL HALF STACK IS PIMP~~~~!!! YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS!
