Marshall JCM 2000 TSL 602, good deal?

Re: Marshall JCM 2000 TSL 602, good deal?

I'm biased but I would stay away from it. But if you have played one before and like the sound go for it, should be cheaper though to be honest 500 at least.

id pass. I used to own a 601. It didnt sound too great without doing a lot of mods and even then it was still very uninspiring sounding.

I was thinking about dropping 2 celestions in it and of course a tube upgrade, which would probably run me to around $800. I could probably buy something better. Any recommendations for something similar but better, versatile?

depending what kind of sounds you are looking for the laney ironheart and jet city amps are good value and not too pricey

yeah do you use pedals for gain or amp gain ?

Yes I have a few od/distortion I use, so built in distortion is not necessary. I wanted the jcm 800 sound but for cheap, as I don't play gigs. I thought the jcm 2000 was a good option, but then I saw your replies and other reviews. I'm lost, not even sure what to look at

IMO, the whole TSL line sounded great - probably my favorite Marshall tone short of a Plexi. However, they just don't have any resale value, especially the combos. Seeing that I was only able to get $800 for my TSL 122, and that was the most I could have hoped for, I would say $650 for the 602 is high. It needs tubes too, on top of it. I'd pass if you can't get it for under $500.

Decent deal if you really want the TSL... that is the model I played through a 1960a Marshall cab a few times at gigging/rehearsal volume. It was better than the DSL for sure but still not my ideal amp but you may love it.

judging by your name, you're into qotsa. I actually like them a lot, and if I were to buy a cab it would be the same one. Is the amp good for qotsa stuff? And other high gain stuff like smashing pumpkins, or whatever else?

Re: Marshall JCM 2000 TSL 602, good deal?

yeah Smashing Pumpkin stuff will sound good through the TSL I think... QOTSA might be a different story but it depends what pedals you are using. That is a good price for a TSL though when I see them in my area they are usually 600 or so.

Re: Marshall JCM 2000 TSL 602, good deal?

Decent deal on that head. I had that same head for a while and finally got some usable tone out of it after a couple tube changes.
If you get it yell I have some suggestions.

Absolutely, will do! I was hoping to throw in KT-88's tubes (or similar), but I'll send you a PM later on.

That's a great price on the amp. I paid $650 for mine with a greenback loaded 1960. A lot of people don't like the TSL, but I find it to be an extremely versatile amp.

Wow, that sounds like a good deal for head plus cab. Wish I was getting a similar deal. I'll have to hunt down a cab, which will probably cost around $300 at least

Re: Marshall JCM 2000 TSL 602, good deal?

^ I agree.
Anything less then rehearsing/gigging volumes and you're simply not gonna be hearing the best the TSL has to offer, which is much like many bigger iron Marshall amps really.
They don't sound good at all for bedroom playing. They get a lot more girth/thickness to the sound when you really crank them up, not at all thin and buzzy like you would have read from people that only ever played them in a guitar shop at low volume. Not as thick and beefy as a 5150 mind you, but still plenty of balls.
That all being said, if you MUST get a TSL, get the TSL100 and a good 4x12 (I'd recommend a darker sounding cab like a Recto cab, since the TSL can be a relatively bright amp) rather than a combo and swapping out speakers. Less hassle and you have the versatility of being able to plug into whatever cab you want, as well as not having to deal with the shared EQ which comes with the 60 watt version of the amp.
