Marshall JMP-1

Okay. I'm thinking about buying a JMP-1 used on Ebay. But readying Harmony central I've read VERY mixed reviews. Some great. Some horrible. Does anyone have any positive or negative experience with these? I'll be using it with a Mesa 50/50 Power amp so my power section will be tube driven. Thanks!

I have one and I really like it. it takes a little bit to dial in. The dirty tones are very good, and playable. Some will argue that the clean channel isn't clean enough, but whatever. I would recommend you find an EL34 power amp (marshall, VHT, ENGL). Sometimes you can find the 9000 series 50x50 power amp for under 500.00. It has drake transformers and the whole bit. Have fun in the search. Oh, I think Evan was playing through one. If that was his rig in the background at that last Jam they showed photos of.

Thanks! Really I'm partial to my Mesa 50/50, just bought it a couple of months back. Do you think the JMP-1 would not sound good with a 6L6 Power Amp? I really don't want to buy another on right now. I could get it re-biased I suppose but not sure if I want to go down that road just yet either. I like the 6L6s, but then again I've never really compared them to the EL34s hehe.

Like 54stratlover said, that preamp is only as good as it's power amp, which accounts for many of the shady reviews. I had a good sound with a JMP-1 and Mesa 295 power amp, and would probably seek out the current gold/glass
50/50 or 100/100. The guy that shares my rehearsal room uses that 100/100 and JMP-1/Lexicon and has a big sound.

About the Jam pic, that JMP-1/Mosvalve rig was Adrian Galysh's. He's a great player with a tone and vibe very similar to Joe Satriani. As good as he sounded as a player, I thought to myself that his tone would be better with a tube Marshall, VHT, or Mesa. That would be the way to go. don't skimp on the power amp.

Re: Marshall JMP-1

So with my Mesa 50/50 (similar to your 2:95 I think, just less power), and 6L6s, would I be okay? I'm thinking yes as the Mesa is an awesome power amp. (I don't think I'd ever get rid of it) I think EL34s would just give me more of that "classic", Marshall sound, and not necessarily sound better, just...different than 6L6s. I don't want to give up my Mesa! I could get it rebiased though...but I'm not sure if I want to do this right now.

Yeah reading those reviews on HC a lot of folks did seem to be using solid state and/or maybe sub par power amps. I've come to realize, mostly through you good folks here and then by my own ears!, that a good tube power amp/power section is a HUGE part of getting a good tone. Maybe the JMP-1 is just much more sensitive to it than other pre-amps/pedals.

i had one...I needed money real bad and sold it...I have regreted it every single day since then. I used mine with a Marshall 9200 (which is now for sale) and loved every minute of it (after the sale of the 9200 I will buy another JMP-1). KILLER PRE-AMP!!!

Re: Marshall JMP-1

you know, I have never tried my jmp-1 with a 6l6/6550 power amp. It will probably sound great. You got me thinking, and I actually think with power amp like yours there may be really good lead tones (for the discovering!). On an amp like a road king from mesa. I prefer the 6L6s for creating lead tones. I tend to think there is more of a singing tone. My gut instinct usually likes to pair the JMP 1 with an el34 power amp. you will have to give us reviews!
It's funny you mention getting a jmp-1. I have recently found a triaxis for sale for under 800, and I was gonna maybe get it and try it through an el34 power amp, i don't have a 6L6 power amp......yet.

Re: Marshall JMP-1

The 6L6 power amps by Mesa sound great, epecially loaded with Tesla or Svetlana, rather than their midline Sovteks that often come as stock. You'll probably have a better clean tone with the 6L6 power amp, and the JMP-1 is versatile enough to give you most shades of Marshall. I used the JMP-1/Mesa 295 rig from 92-94, and looking back, it was my most versatile rig ever. I'm not a fan of stuffing a bunch of garbage in a rack to look like Vernon Reid or Petrucci. Just a Furman cond, pre, multiFX, and power amp, inside of an 8 space rack, on top of a stereo cab, is all you need.
