I'm not fam with that model for the Marshall...is that a 900 series? If so, I personally would go MESA. But it really depends on what you are looking for.

In my limited experience with MESA over the years and with my current amp, they do several things really well, some things incredibly well. Whereas Marshall's pretty much are one trick ponies..regardless if it is a 3 channel or NMV amp. It just seems the Marshall magic is in simplicity. The more channels, switches and buttons they have, the worse they sound. MESAs on the other hand don't seem to have that issue.

Play 'em both. Make your choice.

Re: marshall sl-x VS mesa dc-5 head

i have owned both at one point a sl-x head and a dc-5 combo and i liked them both

Re: marshall sl-x VS mesa dc-5 head

I actually like the distortion sounds of the SLX better than the DC-5. But the SLX is definately a one trick pony. I would go with the DC-5 just so I had the 2nd channel With the SLX I would be lugging two amps around.

Re: marshall sl-x VS mesa dc-5 head

one trick is fine as long as it's a good one!! this is a very early SL-X before the switch to 5881 power tubes

Re: marshall sl-x VS mesa dc-5 head

In that light then i say rock on with the SLX :headbang: ... I definately like the EL-34's better in them... but I always wanted to try 6550's in one...

Personally, I'd go with the Marshall, then put Svets and GT12AX7C's in it.

Not trying to hijack the thread but have you had good luck with your GT12ax7's? I ordered 5 and 2 died within a month. Then one of the others started really going downhill in tone not long after that... I got the replacements and had one of those blow... I gave up at that point...

Re: marshall sl-x VS mesa dc-5 head

i use the GT12ax7-C's in my soldano and they are great in a high gain amp i tried the GT12ax7-M but it was a little too much in the soldano . i was going to try jjel-34's and GT12ax7-c in the marshall .

Re: marshall sl-x VS mesa dc-5 head

For my tastes, the SLX. I know nothing about the Mesa though but if it is like typical Mesas with a classic Mesa tone then you just need to decide what sound you want

Re: marshall sl-x VS mesa dc-5 head

I own a dc5 combo.........it is a very nice amp with very fenderish cleans and that classic boogie lead tone (think mark series, not the rectifiers tone). On the other hand it does NOT excel at getting a marshall tone........so if you are after a marshall sound then go with the marshall. Otherwise i would prefer the boogie.

Re: marshall sl-x VS mesa dc-5 head

Which one sounds better to your ears? Both are essentially different, tonally ;)

I personally would probably grab the Mesa...

Re: marshall sl-x VS mesa dc-5 head

Get the SL-X. I have the 2100 model that was out before the SL-X. It just has one less preamp tube than the SL-X has. Since that sucker has EL34's, get it. Those are the good ones. I've had a tech look at mine and tell me it's a very well built amp. Tube sockets are hardwired (good thing). When they switched to 5881's, that's when they started to sound like crap. I'm guessing it's about a 1993-early 1994 model since it has EL34's. $500.00???? THAT'S IT???? Drop your money and run with the amp before the dude changes his mind.

I have an early 2100 also!! I like it alot myself!!!

$500 is a good deal for one these days.

Re: marshall sl-x VS mesa dc-5 head

Amen. I paid a little over $500 for mine when I got it in 1996. A buddy of mine who worked at GC turned me on to it. I couldn't believe someone traded it in. It's way better than the dual reverbs with the 5881's in them.

+1, except I do think the boost on the clean was great for Marshall tones. It's definitely an amp you have to like, cuz if you don't it isn't for you. I for one didn't like it all that much.

Have no experience with the SLX but I've heard incredible stories about it, I did however also hear they have reliability issues
