Marshall Tsl60 Power tube Disaster :/ So sick, plz help!

Ok, I’ve had a Marshall TSL60 head, snd while much maligned, I had gotten it to sound glorious!! New Production Genalex KT77’s for power tues...And a bunch of different nos preamp tubes had it soundîng just beautiful...Complex, harmonic rich distortion with a great sizzle...could sound great completely scooped or with the mods at like 6-8/10...(Raytheon 12DF7 v1, Mazda France Military Silverplate v2, And I’d switch up v3&4 with either a 1958 Dario/Miniwatt Mazda France longplate And a “Heath” By Mullard Late 50’s Longplate) So the Preamp stuff was the real deal!

Ok, so I got a matched pair of 50’s Mullard Xf1 Dual Getter EL34’s... Just wanted to see if I could get any sound from them! I actually backed the bias trimpot off a bit to make sure they wouldn’t burn up! My tech guy is amazing, just thought I’d give him a head start, so he didn’t need to do as much...

So I took out the Genalex tubes(I put them in myself so complete incompetence isn’t the issue...) I aligned the Xf1’s and then things were good to go, I thought,,, I turned the amp on standby....Waited about 5 mins and then turned the stand by switch on....Didnt have anything plugged into the input...Waited about another 5 mins, and just plugged guitar to cord to amp....Abdolutely ZERO sound...Nothing at all...Yes I have speakers connected and the volume up on my guitar...

Just don’t get it...I changed out 4 6L6GC’s in a Peavey 6505+ before doing this, just for practice...

Can anyone tell me what I’m missing?? I may just buy a new amp and keep all my preamp tubes, which work 100% fin in the Peavey, a Marshall jvm1c(all nos tubes and modded by adding a g10 greenback(no more crap 8 inch! And the 2x12 cab has a Celestion Vintage 30 and a Celestion Gold Alnico...May as well buy a decent 2 channel(one clean, one vintage -hard rock/light metal(Metal prob through pedals...) So I’ve got a bunch of 12 ax7’s I can use...Would rather go with a British voiced amp..So some form of EL34 or KT77’s...Though they say kt66’s or EL84’s could be good for British/Marshall Sizzle...No JVM’s, too common...

But is there a way to fix the TSL60?? If anyone can tell what is wrong!?? Just no sound, at all...No noise in the speakers when you crank up volume and gain...Just DEAD.Quiet. But the Xf1’s are Glowing, Nothing I see different than when the KT77’s were in use...Oh yeah, put the KT77’s back, and still complete silence...Don’t know if that helps :/

I’m heartbroken here...Only upside is maybe I could get a new amp...Please help!!

the tubes still glow only means that the biasing circuit is working, which is not saying much cuz it takes quite a bit of effort to blow those. My best guess is that some dc blocking capacitor got charged up and got somehow shorted and blew, then again, it could be anything. also not sure why you left it on standby at first

Check your fuses maybe [ H.T.fuse - it has one ]

I thought that when first putting new power tubes in that you should let them warm up first, hence me leaving it w/the standby off for a lil while :/ Was my first time trying to do this part on my own, I know better now than to just “guess my way through it!” :/ The Only heartening thing I see is that the Genalex’svarent working, and they were the ones I just took out!

Thank you for the thought of the fuse/fuses...Never have done that before...Seems I was being stupid as I wanted to do it myself and not go to the tech...If he can’t fit me in for a few mins to look, it becomes a long process...Like a month and a half to get 2 guitars fitted w/new pickups and setup, one w/a prewired harness...I feel bad cuz they get backed up and the work they do is spot on!! But just got a soldering station, so gonna try changing a scratchy, old pot in my G&L(seems to not always want to go to 100% open, like 97%...can Definitely notice w/all the fuzz I play!! )

The tsl will b fixed, hopefully, but this has just made me realize I want a new amp...A 2 channel amp w/a clean channel that is a champ at taking pedals, and a dirty channel that can go from vintage rock to modern gain. To clarify, hard rock like EVH. But with the ability to get into “light metal.”I grew up listening to Grunge, the Soundgarden,STP And AiC stuff...Heavy, but complex and with actual tone. I’ve had Marshall’s for so long(the tsl60 was my “flagship” amp since 2000, the nos preamp tubes made it a beast...Gain, but clarity and note separation.) Still have all the nos 12ax7’s(a 12df7 was my v1 and it was and is amazing)

Any thoughts on a $2kish amp That’s like Marshall Plus!!?
Thanks everyone!

This^^^ it's common for a bad output tube to blow the HT fuse. Just because you spent the cash on 1950's Mullards doesn't mean they are good. Doesn't mean they are bad either, but it would be an easy fix. If the are faulty, I hope the seller backs his/her tubes. At any rate, check the HT fuse. Looking at the manual, it appears to be a 500ma slow blow (T500maL). But double check, the fuse may be marked on the end caps.

If you backed off your bias all the way down, it might be below cut off. In other words the bias isn't allowing any current flow and hence no sound. How many mv do you have on your meter?

You have described the Silver Jubilee 2555x. But don't give up on the TSL yet.

Yeah, seems like you did a lot of work without knowing what you were doing. Definitely check the fuses, and I agree with LPB's assessment also, blindly just turning down the bias, especially on a different type of tube may be running the tube in cut off.

I'll also go out on a limb and say that it sounds like you have spent about as much on tubes as you have amps to put them in. Sometimes old tubes are just old, and won't always sound better or be more reliable than new tubes.

Re: Marshall Tsl60 Power tube Disaster :/ So sick, plz help!

Ok,I’ll just stick to the amp techs for problems and questions. I was super excited and got innover my head in the Marshall...But Let’s say I’ve changed every tube in each amp. I was looking for help, not to be talked down to. I did everything to the Marshall at all times, just had left the biasing of the KT77’s to my amp tech. I took apart my Coronado to install nos tubes in each position, having to modify the grille so the RCA 5U4G would fit. No prob there taking the front off multiple times, taking care to not let the speaker connections come lose....Replaced every 6505+ preamp tube w/a nos w/the exception of a new pro Genalex Gold Lion 12ax7...Then Replaced each of the 4 power tubed it uses(before doing the Marshall as a “practice” cuz I don’t know what I’m doing.) Then replaced all the tubes in the jvm1c, easy enough, but then modded it by installing a Celestion g10 greenback in place of the crap speaker in there. Cuz that’s easy...Then Replaced The speakers in my 1936 cab w/a Celestion vintage 30 and Celestion A Type...Wasn’t Happy So got a g12 Gold Alnico... All the while mixing and matching the preamp tubes in 4 amps(forgot about the ht5 m and the 12ad7.) Plus the stereo Plus arraignment wither the Coronado on th left, the jvm1c in the middle and the(now 6505+ or ht5m) on the right instead of the Marshall...So Yeah, There was ONE part I got excited about and thought I could do it....Don’t appreciate being talked down to when I was looking for help, not an “I’m better than you” attitude...As you can see from above, I just don’t know jack.

So considering I like to help ppl when and if I can and don’t judge or look down on others(especially when they know nothing of each other) I’ll definitely be looking into the fuses. Unlike others, if I have to have real work done I have to wait well over a month because of how backed up things are. So I tried something and it didn’t work out. I consider this forum to be a place where ppl support one another, not mock someone who’s seriously down and out and could have used constructive tips, like the majority of ppl did. Yes, now I know more about how to tackle things in the future, but kicking someone when they are down goes well against my standards of decency. I at least know who actually cares about ppl fixing issues and those that just want to be snide. Good day, thought there’d be more decent people in a forum meant to help ppl, especially with this specific call for help. Sorry Moderators, but I’m not taking insults sitting down.
