Martin vs. Taylor

Re: Martin vs. Taylor

I know a lot of guys here and all over like Taylor acoustics but for me a good Martin wins everytime...they just sound right and feel right. Now, there are good and bad examples of both but if you take a great Taylor and a Great Martin for me the Martin will win most of the time.

Re: Martin vs. Taylor

I think they are both great, but I prefer Martins. They seem to sound a bit 'warmer' to me overall. I don't know, its hard to explain. I have played a lot of nice Taylors. But for me, Martin all the way.

Re: Martin vs. Taylor

Martins are nice. I took their factory tour a few years ago, and I also own one of their Backpacker guitars.

However, it might have just been a 'first impression' thing, but I do like the Taylors better. The first Taylor I played seemed like a much better instrument than the first Martin I played. So after that I was kind of always biased towards 'em...but there are certainly nice examples of each.

Re: Martin vs. Taylor

Taylors are a little bright for my tastes. Martins have a bottom end rumble that is very addictive and have an overall warmer tone.

I prefer Taylor's. They just have the sound that my ears like.

The Maple Taylors have a really bright, projecting sound...they have some other wood choices that are a little more subtle.

They also use Elixir strings from the factory which IMO are a little brighter than Martin SP's when used on the same instrument...I just installed a new set of Elixirs on my '68 Gibson and it brightened up considerably.

Re: Martin vs. Taylor

Taylors play better

Martins sound better

Is this thread over yet?

Oddly enough, when I went shopping for a high-end acoustic, I was only looking at Taylors and Martins, and unlike most of you geeks, I actually did the "blindfolded acoustic guitar shopping" thing and went home with a Guild.

I think the Guild had the best and worst of both worlds, it was right down the middle;

Didn't play as good as a Taylor, but sounded better

Didn't sound as good as a Martin, but played better.

Re: Martin vs. Taylor

I like K Yairi and Guild....Martins...only the old ones intrests me...as for Taylor...never got my attention really.

+1 for Yairi - they're awesome, I've got a 10yr old Gordon Giltrap Signature model. The only thing thats come near it in terms of tone and clarty was a £3k Doyle Dykes Signature Taylor.

Re: Martin vs. Taylor

i like the yairi's too, really good guitars that are pretty under rated. i love old guilds

i have a really nice taylor '98 814ce, martin d2r (solid top lam back and sides d28), '62 hofner 491. the taylor is one of the best acoustic sounding 814's ive heard and it plays like buttah but the d2r has a deeper tone and still plays well. the old hofner (j45 copy) sounds better than either of them, probably cause its old. it doesnt play as well but the tone is fabulous. much richer in the mids than either of them, more bottom than teh taylor but not as much as the martin.

Re: Martin vs. Taylor

I have only tried a Martin D-15 once, but that thing could sustain a note for 27 hours if you wanted to.

Re: Martin vs. Taylor

Martins are nice and have a bigger boomy bottom.. But I love the neck on my Taylor and how it plays. Also, when I bought it in 99 , martin didnt have many options of guitars with electronics. The ones they had then were very pricey. I really like my 814ce

Re: Martin vs. Taylor

I think they both have their place; Taylors seem to be a bit more responsive and definitely top-endy to my ears. Martins sound a bit warmer and have (again to my ears) better balance overall, tonewise. I have no business playing either one, since I'm rather rough on acoustics. I play Ovations.

Re: Martin vs. Taylor

I would take a OM sized Martin with Rosewood and Appalacian Spruce in 28 trim with a long scale neck over any Dread made by anyone, so Martin for me please.

Re: Martin vs. Taylor

i play a lot of finger style on acoustic and i find that martins always have a much more balanced tone for fingerstyle. they project more and def have some more bass. If i had the choice i would rather have a yairi or a top of the line tak.

the clapton model martin is my ideal guitar though...just wouldnt pay that much

Re: Martin vs. Taylor

I don't care for either Martin or Taylor. My next acoustic will most likely be a Collings.

Re: Martin vs. Taylor

I really like Taylor's modern take on acoustic tone. Too me, Martin (especially dreadnaughts) are too dead in the midrange. However, one of the best sounding guitars I've ever played was a Martin Eric Clapton. Maybe at the top of the line Martins can't be beat, but at the layman prices the Taylors are more preferable to me?
