master knobs vs. individual knobs

do you guys prefer master volume and master tone knobs on your guitar, or can you simply not live without having 2 volume knobs and 2 tone knobs, a la les paul.

Re: master knobs vs. individual knobs

Either works.

I'm not drilling holes if the axe didn't come with them.

Re: master knobs vs. individual knobs

I prefer individual master & tone knobs, but I can live with 1 master tone.

It's 1 master volume I can't stand.

Edit: sorry, I meant individual volume and tone knobs. Duh!

1 and 1 for me.

I can see how 2 + 2 could be handy but it'd probably also be harder for quick adjustments...

Re: master knobs vs. individual knobs

i like individual volumes with a master tone

Re: master knobs vs. individual knobs

all of my guitars only use a master volume and tone. I don't need individual volumes, but individual tones would be nice sometimes. On my bridge pickup I tend to keep the tone on full, and on the neck I tend to roll it down to between 5 and 7, so it would be nice to have the seperate controls.

Re: master knobs vs. individual knobs

i dont care about tones, but i need atleast 2 volumes. if i dont, then i need my killswitch. i like flutter effects

Re: master knobs vs. individual knobs

The 2 volume 2 tones thing is what I prefer,

bec

1) You can turn the volume off on one pickup and do the tremolo like effects with the pickup selector,

2) You can set individual tone and volume to each pickup, letting you switch smoothly from rhythm tones to lead tones,

3) You can make a variety of tones in the Middle position, Neck and bridge combination,

by adjusting the neck and bridge volume and tone controls,

Master volume/master tone. Exceptions are my Les Paul and SG. Les Paul is traditional 2/2. The SG is individual volumes with a master tone circuit, G&L style. I find that works very well for me.

Re: master knobs vs. individual knobs

Each has its tradeoffs. The 2+2 setup allows for some interesting timbres as you tweak the mix of the two pickups. A master setup makes it easier to dial in a more limited tonal palette.

As someone who tends to ride the volume control quite a bit, I'm partial to a master volume so I don't need to futz with two knobs when both pickups are engaged. I had a Tremonti SE where I wired it with two tones, neck volume, and master volume. I found that to be a pretty reasonable compromise.

Re: master knobs vs. individual knobs

I've taken a liking for individual controls, especially with two humbucker guitars. I find that the middle position has so much more to give when you can adjust the volumes separately to create different bridge-neck -combinations.

DO WHAT?

I like Master Volume, Master Tone.

2 knobs for me, and turn them both more during one song than some players do in their whole life.

My 335, PRS, '51 and Jackson all are wired with Master Volume, Master Tone. My Strat is Master Volume, Neck Tone, Middle + Bridge Tone. I understand why it needs to be like that: it's got 3 pickups whereas all the others aforementioned have 2.

Re: master knobs vs. individual knobs

I like to just have 1 of each. Makes adjustments on they fly real easy, plus I got used to it having it on most of my guitars, specially the first ones.

Re: master knobs vs. individual knobs

most guitars i prefer just a working master volume, and have for years... but...

exeptions;
on some strats i prefer a master volume... and a tone wired to the bridge PU

on teles i prefer a mast vol and tone

and on Les Pauls/sg's i prefer the standard lay out

Re: master knobs vs. individual knobs

I prefer a master volume for the whole guitar, for the tone knobs I don't really even care if they exsist, so either way on those.
