It's different from what I typically think of when I think of prog metal (Crack the Sky's sounds for example) but I don't know that those guys are as revered for their tone as they are for their playing ability.

Any info like this is good.

Although no one drools over their tones, it's impressive how they can have complex arrangements and still maintain clarity all while sounding huge. A big part of this is how it's recorded.

I would happily set any of you on fire for the Crack the Skye tone.

It might not be a common sought-after thing, but for me it's perfect. It sounds wide, open, clear and fat. It has just the right amount of gain.
It's ridiculous how much I set my own sound after that specific album.

It's either that or Metallica's Load for me.

I think only one song (title track) has that tuning (AGCFAD).
The rest it's all either Drop C or Standard D, like this one:



That riff at 7:25 is THE SOUND I'm after.

I think they've been using the Drop A stuff a lot more in their recent albums than they were on Crack the Skye. Curl of the Burl was the first one that I knew was Drop A (although I could be wrong).
