Matching low watt heads with cab question...

I was wondering what are the standards for matching head wattage with cabinet wattage etc, or does it matter?

For example: the Epiphone 5 watt head, does it work better in a cabinet that is also lower watt or does it not matter as long as the head is lower then the cab?

I figured a lower watt head would be able to be push a lower watt cab better then say a higher rated cab. I figure you want to get some speaker movement so you would get there quicker with a lower rated cab.

But on the flip side, say i want to upgrade at some point to a 100 watt head but I only bought a 40 watt cab, would that render my cab worthless at that point?

Is it just best to buy the biggest possible to cover future purchases?

Re: Matching low watt heads with cab question...

The main purpose of more closely matching speaker rating to head output rating, is to get some speaker breakup into the sound. If your not concerned with speaker breakup, or don't like it, then it doesn't really matter.

Another factor is that, some speakers like the G12T75 Celestion, seem to sound somewhat sterile and weak, when driven by low wattage. Other speakers don't.
