Mbox vs Toneport?

Hey guys, i'm getting a usb device for recording and I need help deciding which one to get. I've been told that the mbox recording qualtity is much better than the toneport.
Does anyone have expirience with these two and can recommend one? Or even a differenet device?

The Mbox comes with Pro tools. Thats the reason I ordered it. Haven't received it yet, but my usnderstanding is its a real good audio interface. I investigated a lot of different models, I wound up ordering the MBox mini, with monitors and a few other items.............. STILL WAITING. It was Back ordered, but hopefully I should have it soon.

Yeah, they're not really in the same category IMO. The MBox is bundled with ProTools LE, and can be used for many different types of recording. The Toneport is geared towards guitarists who want to do some recording.

In terms of quality, the MBox is a very good interface. I really dislike PTLE personally, but some people get along with it just fine. The MBox hardware though is very good, and will run fine in any application that accepts an ASIO driver (such as Cakewalk SONAR and Cubase).

With that high bit rate digital signal the quality will be virtually the same. My tascam US 122L has really nice quality and was dirt cheap.

Bit depth has less to do with the overall sound than the quality of the AD/DA converters and preamps. Interfaces from Metric Halo, RME and MOTU will kill the MBox, Toneport and Tascams because they have superior converters and preamps, even at the same bit depth and sample rates.

x2, A/D and D/A is where you need to focus. Metric Halo is the good stuff when it comes to preamp / CAI's.


For cheepnis (which is a word, according to Frank Zappa) I'd go for the Line6 just because of the larger user community; which means better "support," and I don't mean the kind you get from the company.

The best thing on the Black Box to me was the syncable effects. The Toneport has good mic pres in software for vocals and the guitar stuff is what you would expect from Line6. I had the first BB and the guitar tones were not happening except a few.

Opps! Did you mean M-Box or Black Box? If you meant M-Box, nevermind. They are totally different animals. The Toneport does a good job of recording though.

if you are going to mic the amp for recording ,get the MBox.
If you like to record with the software ,get the toneport!

The Toneport's main selling point, really, is the Gearbox software that comes with it -- which, incidentally, has applications beyond just "a guitarist who wants to do some recroding." It's an excellent solution for anyone doing it all him/herself, one track at a time. It's not, however, a very good choice for tracking more than two sources at once (and because of hardware limitations, only ONE of your two sources can be an instrument). Apart from Gearbox, it's just another limited I/O box...

GearBox is great! I wish I had known how great back when I bought my PODxt - I could have saved a few bills by just getting a TonePort.

When recording actual releases of projects I mic up without fail, but for throw-around demos and writing songs I love using Gearbox.

I'm *this* close to purchasing a UX2 to run for mobile stuff and as another 2 inputs via SPDIF.


And yeah, Smilemon, bitrate has nothing to do with the quality of the converters.

Ok, no need to rub my nose in my mistake. I thought that the bitrate had a bit to do with the sound, all I know is my tascam does pretty **** good recordings.

There seems to be some confusion here. I imagine that what you guys are calling "bitrate" is probably meant to be bit depth, which is a different thing. Bit depth describes the amount of data contained in each sample, measured in bits. The common depths are 16 bit for CD, 24 bits for DVD Audio. There is also the measurement for sample rate, the number of samples per second, with the common settings of 44.1k, 48k, 96k, etc.

Whilst these two factors do have an effect on the sound, that is not to say that two devices will sound identical or even similar just because they are operating at the same bit depth and/or sample rate. That's why I mentioned the factors of the AD/DA converters and preamps in audio interfaces contributing more to their overall quality. You will certainly hear the difference between 8 bit and 24 bit recordings, but you will also hear a difference between an MBox and a Metric Halo both set to 24 bit and the same sample rate, because of the difference in the quality of the converters.
