Megadeth and Line 6

poking around a Guitar One mag at a store today i see Megadeth are using custom made Line 6 amps.. hmmm..... i wonder what they are...? I should have another look at Line 6 gear

Re: Megadeth and Line 6

It's a sad day for an oldskool megadeth fan...

I concur....they had some great tones when they were a Bogner powered band! There latest tones aren't bad, but not as good as the early 90s.

Re: Megadeth and Line 6

mustain endorses everything from jackson to esp guitars, dean guitars, rocktron, and now line6. it's great that he's rolling in dough, but megdeths tone had always been great before. why change to line6 now? i'm curiously awaiting what will come of his new dean + line6 sound. is the old megadeth gone? after hearing their gears of war stuff, i'm not too sure about that. some good stuff.

Re: Megadeth and Line 6

I thought Mustaine and Poland's tone on Peace Sells...But Who's Buying was the best. pure Marshall crunch 'n grind. "Devil's Island!!!!!!!!"

besides Davy boy, who's in Megadeth now? isn't Ellefson in some thrash band now?

didn't Mustaine have his leather pants up on eBay a few years back? is he having money problems? would that explain his endorsing every brand under the sun?

Re: Megadeth and Line 6

He might've used that crap to record, but I would be surprised if he is gonna take it on the road. You know live it would be just KAKA. How do you switch to Line6 from Bogner ... live?

Re: Megadeth and Line 6

If they've still got good tone, who the hell cares what the badge on the head says? I don't.

I think what gets under so many people's skin is the fact that they can no longer justify their 80 bajillion dollar amp head. Great tone can be had in SS technology and for cheap, the trouble is that you have to be smarter than the amp.

Re: Megadeth and Line 6

I think the 80 bajillion dollar amp heads justify themselves...people who don't have them and/or don't like them tend to poo poo their existence.

I can hear the difference like night and day bewteen early (Marshall), 90s (Bogner) and current (Rocktron) Megadeth. The Marshall and Bogner guitar tones sounded better even though the production technology is less than what is out there today.

Re: Megadeth and Line 6

Dave's always been an endorsement whore. Nothing new there.

I always thought the guitar tones on Countdown were pretty much the milestone, personally.

Re: Megadeth and Line 6

Seriously, I don't think Dave gets a whole lot from these endorsement deals.... How many DV8 guitars do you actually think ESP sold? I guess his cut may have been $100 for each LTD sold, and probably higher on any ESP sold. I don't think he made more than $10,000- but then again, I'm not in the business, I could be way off, but guitars are a very small niche market if you wanted to make money as an endorsee..

An example- the Screamin Demon and Dimebucker are about $10 more than a standard non endorsee pickups- that $10 is the artist endorsement cut- I doubt enough are sold to make any of the artists rich...

I think Dean is making a killing off the Dimebag guitars... a standard '79 series ML with Floyd costs $599. Take the same guitar, add a SD Dimebucker and Dime's name on it, now the guitar costs $999.

Again, maybe I'm way off, but I don't see a big profit margin to make an artists rich enough to insinuate they're jumping around endorsing brand to brand for the money. In the case of Dean, they may be willing to pay Dave a higher fee up front in order to bring some recognition as they're desperate to be known once again as a high end guitar manufacturer. Deans are very underrated guitars.

Re: Megadeth and Line 6

Bogner??

When did Mustaine use Bogner amps? I only knew of Marshall and Crate on Deth's story.

Re: Megadeth and Line 6

I thought Dave mainly used a Marshall JMP-1 preamp into Marshall poweramp with a BBE Sonic Maximizer... then recently he's been using that Rocktron thing.... I never heard of him using Bogners.

His best tone/playing I feel was on Rust in Peace

Re: Megadeth and Line 6

well, the songs sounded great. cant wait to hear the whole album.

as for live. people used PODs with good results.

IMO, the best songs and lead tone (Friedman...) were on Rust in Peace. By far the best Deth album. BUT...

The best rhythm tones weren't there IMO. Youthanasia takes the prize for me. :D

Also, the rhythm tone on Cryptic Writings had a very distinctive gritty/hi-fi thing going on. I like it.

EDIT: Thanks Binnerscot! I'm reading that article. Tons of cool information!

Re: Megadeth and Line 6

I read a similar thing in this months Guitar and Bass magazine that I subscribe too.

It mentions his new signature Line6 amp heads, and also that his current signature Dean guitars have his signature Seymour Duncan pickup in them, but that he wasn't sure for how much longer that would be.

If anyone's interested in Dave's actual wording I'll dig the article out and quote it here :)

Re: Megadeth and Line 6

i agree with the marshall thing. that's what i remember them using mainly. i also agree that countdown is most representative of classic megadeth tone. i disagree though with the rocktron thing because i think they sounded great and rocktron makes some world class equipment.
