I can believe they used a 101b - the tones on Countdown are definitely representative of that (IMO) perfect Marshall metal tone. No surprise it could have come from a Bogner.
I still maintain that Countdown is pretty much their best-sounding album, tone and production-wise to this day. Rust was their best ALBUM, but the sound of Countdown trumps it for me. Note that I don't own and haven't heard the remasters that came out a few years ago - I'm talking about the original album mixes here.
The rhythm tones are very similar to Rust, but Rust always sounded a little thin to me. Countdown tone has all the clarity, but more guts and punch. Youthanasia guitar tones are much darker, gainier, and more compressed and don't quite stand up to Countdown, IMO.
