i agree with the marshall thing. that's what i remember them using mainly. i also agree that countdown is most representative of classic megadeth tone. i disagree though with the rocktron thing because i think they sounded great and rocktron makes some world class equipment.

Bogner is what a Marshall should sound like, that could be why you like Countdown.

I've heard half of the new album, and it's amazing. Most of the songs sound straight off of CTE, and the rest are just as kickass. Mustaine is at his best, vocally, IMO, and the rest of the band is in tip-top shape.

i loved the tone on the tune angry again.dont know what dave used to record that,i have a line 6 150 watt half stack cause i did not have the green for the mesa road king i have wet dreams about,and im hooking the line 6 up with a digitech 3000 guitar work station and im getting some slamming sounds outta that set up ,so im getting good bang for my buck.but i am gonna go with a tube amp to add to my arsenal soon.

I thought Dave mainly used a Marshall JMP-1 preamp into Marshall poweramp with a BBE Sonic Maximizer... then recently he's been using that Rocktron thing.... I never heard of him using Bogners.

His best tone/playing I feel was on Rust in Peace

Dave has definitely used Bogner in the past, including the Bogner Fish preamp and the Hafler Triple Giant preamp (designed by Reinhold Bogner). iirc, Rust was recorded with the Hafler Triple Giant and VHT 2150 power amps.

you guys ever notice that half these guitarists can't remember (or won't divulge) what gear they actually used on past albums? Van Halen, Slayer, etc.....I've read so many conflicting statements outta their own mouths about gear that it's hopeless :9:

Dave or Marty or both used the Bogner Fish Preamp on Rust in Piece, which is the best tone they ever had IMO.

I can believe they used a 101b - the tones on Countdown are definitely representative of that (IMO) perfect Marshall metal tone. No surprise it could have come from a Bogner.

I still maintain that Countdown is pretty much their best-sounding album, tone and production-wise to this day. Rust was their best ALBUM, but the sound of Countdown trumps it for me. Note that I don't own and haven't heard the remasters that came out a few years ago - I'm talking about the original album mixes here.

The rhythm tones are very similar to Rust, but Rust always sounded a little thin to me. Countdown tone has all the clarity, but more guts and punch. Youthanasia guitar tones are much darker, gainier, and more compressed and don't quite stand up to Countdown, IMO.

I agree with the additions of Killing is My Business and Peace Sells to your list.

We actually used the Line 6 in the end without the Prophesy, into a Boogie cab.
Dave uses the Prophesy live because the switching is better, and from what I understand Line 6 is now not going to be manufacturing this amp, so he's looking at some different companies.

Yeah I noticed when I saw megadeth last week that they had line 6 stacks behnind em . . . . weird. Oh well, the tone was awesome and the show was amazing. I think I chalk up alot of the tone awesomness to the Mustaine lIve Wires though!!!

"Countdown to Extinction" had the best guitar tone, imo. But that wasn't Bogner tone you're hearing, it was a Custom Audio Electronics 3+ tube preamp and VHT G-2150-S tube power amp.

Weird...I always thought that album sounded like a sack of smashed *******s.

Rust In Peace is where it peaked with me tonally.

It doesn't necessarily surprise me that they could get results out of a modeling amp. Many players have used them for their versatility. Michael Romeo, Allan Holdsworth, Adrian Belew, . . . plenty of others, I'm sure. If they sounded like crap, nobody would ever have any use for them.

Yeah the guitar tone and drums on RIP is clearly the winner for me.But Countdowns has the better Bass tone IMHO
