Mesa Dual/triple Rectifier vs. Peavey 5150/6505

Actually, I have a 6505 half stack. There is one excellent clip, I will post if I can find it.

What I'm looking for is the sound of the 6505 with midrange heavily scooped and the resonance feature activated.

The clip I'm looking for showed the Triple rectifier had most of the same low end sag and thump ( almost like playing percussion with your guitar if you know what I mean).

^That is what I like, but the 6505 seems to lose upper mid detail,become 'washed out" -well, that's just my term for it.




What I would like to know from anyone with experience with both amps, is does the Mesa Triple Rectifier ( or also I might be interested in the Dual Recto- but to me the Triple sound better on clips) have the same thumping tube amp sag with scooped mids as the 6505/5150? I can't live w/o that!

^To me, if it does, and the clip I hope to post illustrating this indicates that it does, then I think the Mesa has more note definition for high gain noodling/shred with about the same or more low mid/ low end sag and brutal thump.

I hope this isn't too obtuse.

EDIT- I found the Clip;

..am I not correct? The Mesa, the Soldano, and the Engl slay the 6505.
I mean, inperson, I know full well how massive the 6505/5150 sounds, but these clips, all the other amps sound even brutal'er( wait..is that word? ..no matter).

I think the Uberschall ( not demonstrated in the clip) would probably destroy many if not most or even ANY amp in this department..IDK.

Too bad I don't have a dumpload of money..I'd just buy them all.

Hey I've had both! Actually I have had a mid-90s 2 channel Triple Rec, a mid-2000s 3 channel Triple Rec, and a 5150II.

The Mesa does in fact have a bit more definition, and headroom. The resonance feature is cool on the 6505 but ultimately you have more control over the EQ with the Mesa as well. The newer versions with multi-watt, pentode/triode, and bold/spongy options are very cool in that you also have control over how the amp "feels". The downside I've found is when you record it, it somehow seems smaller, or more boxy than the Peavey. Not sure how much that matters to you.

The 5150/6505 is a bit better at having a full, yet tight low end. Not that the Mesa is bad, especially with the fx loop trick, just the Peavey is better. I also prefer the midrange of the 5150 but that's personal preference.

Ultimately they are both great amps, brutal as f*ck really, and you could probably get both to do about the same things very well. You will just have more options and versatility with the Mesa in my experience. Hope that helps!

I thought the 5150 blew the Mesas away in that clip. All three of the Mesas have the low end sounding like it's falling apart, and funnily enough the Marshall Valvestate sounds VERY similar to the Rectos to me. The Engl sounds the most 'modern' and clear, the Soldano the warmest and fullest without being muddy and the 5150 hangs with them both. Of those amps based on that recording, I'd pick every Mesa last. Now, have Ola Englund demo them and dial em in right and my opinion may change lol.

Ok I had not seen the clip you found when I posted. In that video, the Mesa sounds very small and boxy to my ears (comparatively) like I was saying, and to me the Peavey sounds the best. Its videos like this that made me go out and get the 5150. However, when I got one and used it live, I found I couldn't get my guitar to sit in the mix where I wanted it to like I could with the Mesa. In person the Triple Rectifier feels a little stiffer overall, but punchier, more articulate, and you have more control over the EQ. At least to me.

^ I can see that. My buddy plays a Dual Rec, and his tone is crushing live. Very punchy.

All of the amps are played mic'd up through a Mesa cabinet, which will make a large difference.

If the settings in the video pics are anything to go off of, they had the mids fairly high on the 5150.

Also - if money's an issue, go ahead and grab a Valvestate and Ibanez TBX150. You should be able to find those under $200. Yes, they're solid state. If you can't get good tones out of them, that's your fault.

Could you get the tone you're looking for with one of the Mesa distortion boxes with the EQ? Like the Throttle Box EQ?

That Throttle Box EQ looks awesome -- in some ways maybe better than a Throttle Box and an EQ.

I thought Ola worked for Bugera and only dialed their amps in correctly on video??
