i have the 50 watt model rect-o-verb and its my first tube head so i dont know much about them. right now i think the tubes are over heating when i play it. after about 15 minutes or so the volume will start cutting out and then it will smell like something's burning. i havent played on the amp for a long amount of time because i dont want to do any damage to it. i let the tubes warm up at least 5 minutes before playing on them and i dont know if im doing something else wrong.

A burning smell is not a good sign. It may be a bad tube but you may have other issues that are far harder to diagnose online. If the amp is new, exchange it for a different amp. If you bought it used, get it to a tech before you do some real damage.

Have the tubes been biased as of late?

unless a bias trim pot is installed, you dont bias a rect-o-verb. Burning smell?!?! take it to a tech man! that could be so many different things, and none of them are good!

Tech shop or exchange if the amp is new. NOW.

i got it off ebay, he said it was used, but in perfect working order.

Again... take the amp to a tech and don't turn the thing on until you do!

screen resistors are going/bad tubes. maybe filter cap, too. take ti to a tech, NOW.

Check the 6L6/EL34 bias and make sure it's still on 6L6.

If it is, take it to a tech. If it isn't, it might be worth it to take it to a tech anyway.

I sometimes smell the dust burning off the tubes on an older amp that hasn't been played in awhile, but I don't know if that's the case for you, so you might be best off to get it checked out.

I agree. Take it to a tech before the problem gets worse. As ScreamingDaisy said, if your Mesa is a series II model be sure that the bias switch setting on the back of the amp matches the current type of tubes in your amp.
