Mesa Stiletto Ace

Re: Mesa Stiletto Ace

I've got the Stiletto Ace head, had it for a little over two months now. I run it through a 412 cab. Hands down, best amp I've ever owned, and that history includes three other Mesa amps.

The Clean Gain setting is Plexi inspired. The dirt channel stays tight and focused. It takes pedals well and sounds great with my rack gear too. It's here to stay!

This is good to hear. These amps sound like they are awesome. I wish I could find some more clips of it.

Re: Mesa Stiletto Ace

This amp has me curious enough to hear it that I'm heading out to the Hollywood Mesa store today to go play through one. After that, I'm going to the 2 best Los Angeles amp stores to play some really high dollar amps....True Tone Music and Westwood Music.

Re: Mesa Stiletto Ace

Let us know what you think of it Joe. I'd like to hear your take on it.

Re: Mesa Stiletto Ace

Yes, a user named UDAMANN posted some recent clips that sound really good.

Hey see if you can get him to post some more clips of that thing like without his fx and just strait up high gain tone. His clips are good but its always nice to hear the amp by itself. I quite liked the amp when I played it but I have not spent hours on it like some of you guys have and I only got to play the Ace Combo with 2 speakers. I wonder how the Ace would sound thru a 4/12 cab.

He just posted some more, gain channel straight.

Re: Mesa Stiletto Ace

 Just finished playing for about an hour and couldn't hold back the excitement - had to bump the thread. I can't say enough about the tones this amp is producing. Really, really worth checking out if anyone's looking into British voiced amps.

Re: Mesa Stiletto Ace

I have owned a series 1 Stiletto Deuce head for about 6 weeks and I absolutely love it. Everything that has been said so far in this thread about the Stiletto's is true. I have finally found the clean tone I've been looking for, nice and fat with some slight shimmer. I much prefer this to the clean channel on my previous amps (Tremoverb, Rectoverb and Mark IV). I have also found the perfect drive channel for me. It provides a nice tight, raunchy rhythm tone that I would describe as Marshall with Mesa overtones. Where I find it really shines over my previous Mesa's is in the leads department. This amp takes pedals extremely well. When I add delay and a touch of OD the sound is almost 3D. With some wah I find myself getting lost in solos and grinning like a little boy.

I never received any comments regarding my tone prior to owning this amp. Since then, in the dozen or so shows I've played, I have received numerous glowing reviews on my tone and several guitarists asking where they can get one of these amps.

I was skeptical about getting the series 1 because they have a bad rap for being thin, with not enough gain. However, I believe my 10 band EQ in the loop really tightens this thing up and makes it roar.

All in all I believe the Stiletto's are some of the best mid priced tube amps on the market.

Re: Mesa Stiletto Ace

If for some reason the other amp I'm working on doesn't pan out, this will be my next amp. If not, it will be my next, next amp. It just sounds like what I am looking for, and I love the 3 different switches on each channel and the solo boost.

If/when I do get one, I want to order it in the Orange Bronco Tolex.

Re: Mesa Stiletto Ace

I went to the Mesa Hollywood store last weekend, but forgot to mention my experience with that amp.....the same exact one Steve has...the green combo.

First off, I like the fact that it has a more aggressive rock tone than most other Mesas, which is more like a versatile Marshall sound. I was hoping to be able to try a head/4-12 combo, but the Mesa combo holds down the tight lows pretty well. I think this might be the amp Jeff H is looking for, based on all he's looking for in an amp. All the modes sounded real good, and I wish I could remember the details, but on Mesas, I just start flicking switches and tweaking them to get what I'm looking for. The amp seems to be a tweakers delight, because all the staple sounds are in there. You can get all the clean to midgain you want, and even the highgain is a sound that requires no OD pedal to get it over the top. It's not really an amp that you can have completely figured out in one sitting. I'm sure SocalSteve took a few days to really get it figured out. I like amps like that though, because you don't get tired of them easily. One thing about Mesa is that they have a signature sound which is hard to describe......really dense sounding with a definite circuit board sound.....it doesn't sound as wide open and sweet as a vintage amp, but those types of amps are usually not good household amps because they need to be cranked. This Mesa is an amp that can be used at home, but also extremely loud in a studio.

Overall, I think it's an amp that a rock player could buy sight unseen, without hearing it first, and be pleasantly surprised. It's not lacking in any areas. If you're a diehard Marshall/Fender/Vox guy, you'll know right away that it has it's own sound, which is distinctly Mesa, but it's the most Marshall-like Mesa they've ever come up with, so there's no complaints. I think it's worth buying. Yeah, it's a little pricey, but at least you won't feel like you've wasted your money.....which is the feeling I'd get if I bought most other Mesa amps. The other day, I A/B'd a Lone Star with a Fender Super Sonic, and the Fender killed it. However, this new Stiletto Ace will equal or outdo the Super Sonic. I think the head version would sound absolutely crushing on a Celestion 4-12 cab. The combo is a great Swiss Army Amp, which would serve any style really well.

Re: Mesa Stiletto Ace

Joe, I kept meaning to ask you if you had a chance to try one out. Thanks for the review. It really does sound like what I'm wanting in a 2 channel amp. I also like the idea that it does the Marshall sound, but doesn't sound like a Marshall. That "dense" sound may be the elusive missing component that I've been searching for out of my Marshall.

I've come to realize that I' not going to get EVERYTHING I want out of one amp, so I am resigned to buying a couple of things over the next few years. I need to get some work done on the Marshall I have, I want another good dual channel amp head, and this sounds like it. I also want a stellar single channel amp that goes from clean to high gain, and I'm working on that also.

Where would you rank the cleans on this thing Joe? Do you remember specifically if you liked the Fat Clean and the Tight Clean, and how they compared to other clean amps?

Re: Mesa Stiletto Ace

Nice review Joneser. So its got lots of gain on tap, and it has its own tone. This sounds more and more appealing.

EDIT: This head makes me drool]

That is more than likely the color I would order.

Re: Mesa Stiletto Ace

thnx to Joneser and everyone else who reviewed this amp. I have played it 2 times for about an hour a sitting (the ace 2/12 combo in green tolex). as you all know there is nothing like haveing an amp for a few weeks to realy know its tone. the first series had great clip but lacked the gain I wanted. This second series had all the gain I wanted plus the clip I like from a el34 based tube amp. haveing different people try it out and listening to there perspectives makes it so much easier to get a feel for the amp especially when I havent owned the amp for a couple of weeks. thnx again everyone have a great week.:bigok:
