mesa v-twin

i finally got the chance to try out a v-twin today at guitar center, and i would have to say that this is one pretty cool pedal.

i played it through a fender blues jr, pro jr, and a line6 flextone 2x12. with all three of the amps, the cleans from this pedal sounded almost EXACTLY like my recto, which i thought was pretty impressive. i didn't really mess around so much with the blues channel on the pedal, although it sort of resembled the "pushed" mode on my recto's clean channel.

the solo channel was pretty much my main interest, and this is where things got a little sketchy. through the jazz clean and the line6 clean settings on the flextone, the sound from this pedal was absolutely HUGE. the bottom end was enormus, and it sounded really full. the only setback i noticed with it is that it still sounded distinctly solid-state, but not in a bad way (what do you expect out of a solid state amp?)

through the fender amps, the OD sounded pretty nasty. i was looking to find a good pedal and a good low-wattage tube amp for home use, something that could get me into the same ballpark as a recto. through the fenders, the low end was real flabby and there was this honky midrangey sound that i couldn't get rid of.

now i'm thinking of just buying a v-twin and a new speaker (one that doesn't have a tear in the cone :gurmpy: )for my line6, and just use that for my bedroom rig. what do you guys think? is there a small tube amp out there that could get some killer recto-like tones with the help of a v-twin? or would it be best to just stick with my line6 and pop in a new speaker?

Re: mesa v-twin

I've had a V-Twin for maybe four years now, and I never got a Recto type sound out of it. I do know that most Fender amps do not react well to this pedal. I've used it in front of Boogies and Marshalls in a pinch when sitting in with other bands, and it worked out fairly well, but I find that the 'lead' channel is closer to a Mark III then a rectifier.
One thing that the V-Twin is great for is going clean right into a P.A. with no guitar amp involved. It sounds amazing...
You may want to try a Hot-Rod Deluxe or something similar - they usually react well to overdrive pedals.

+1 on that. I also find it sounds tighter with my Tech21 amp than with any of the tube amps I have used it with.
