an alternative opinion: if you have a good amp + EQ pedal, even other 'polite' models like the A2P/ '59 can pull off a metal tone...

Re: METAL ONLY! JB or distortion or 81

I havent heard a better metal combo than an 81b & an 85n. ive tried the JB, DD and even the super distortion on les pauls... and nothing screams METAL than the EMG's.

Re: METAL ONLY! JB or distortion or 81

I don't think EMG's are sterile, but they do have a compressed, flat response from the built-in preamp that colors the tone for sure. I love EMG's for metal, but for other stuff I prefer a litle more organic like Duncans, Wagners, Voodoos, Rio, and others.

nope. on kill em all, both dudes used stock pickups. on ride the lightning, james put an invader in his white v, and kirk (supposedly, i havent seen any absolute proof) had 2 DD's in one of his gibson v's. they started using EMGs (not in all guitars) during the ride the lightning tour. then on puppets, james mostly used a stock gibson '84 explorer, and i think it was his jackson kv that had EMGs in it. they both used the mk IIc+ for pretty much all of that album, re-wired as a pre-amp with a marshall power amp. then on justice they switched pretty much entirely to EMG's, and have been using mostly them since.

close enough :laugh2:

Probably the best way to say it.

For what you´re looking for SAB, I´d recommend the 81, DD, EMG 85,and Duncan Custom. In that order.

I wanted to put hthe custom and 85 higher, buit you´re not really looking for versatility or a good thump, but more of a classic thrash tone. That´sa where the 81 and the DD excel IMO. The aforementioned 18V mod on EMGs I also recommend for the added openness and headroom, but that may not be what you´re looking for ;)

You may want to take a look at the Livewire Heavy Metals as well, though ;)

Re: METAL ONLY! JB or distortion or 81

i'm very very happy with my JB/59n combo. the JB is a mean riffing machine when push comes to shove and it's tight as hell. i'm sorry that i cannot post a review of the 81b/85n combo today but the KE3 with the zakk set deal i hoped to have my fingers in, slipped through them... i'm still pissed about it.

anyway.. i'd be willing to try the ceramic JB thing if i had a magnet to fiddle with

zerb, do you have any laying around that you could send me? in a way they wouldnt break apart? and do check your PM please

Re: METAL ONLY! JB or distortion or 81

Where is the best place to buy pickups? Some onlineshop or anything that ships worldwide...

Re: METAL ONLY! JB or distortion or 81

As a former owner of an EMG 81/85 equipped Kramer and a current owner of a Wolfgang with a JB, I'll take the JB hands down. My band does all 80's Metal. We don't do any Zakk era Ozzy but we do everything else from Bark at the moon to old VH and the JB gets all those little squealy false harmonics on the low strings with ease like Zakk's style. The JB is a very responsive pickup.

IMO, active pickups tend to take away from the natural sound of the guitar. It seems to me if you have a nice piece of wood, let it breath through a really good passive pickup.

Re: METAL ONLY! JB or distortion or 81

just to be a little off topic here... how often do you have to change a battery in an active pickup??? I've always wondered and never asked.

Re: METAL ONLY! JB or distortion or 81

Actually active pickups tend to allow more of the guitar's tone come through as they are designed to be fairly transparent.

Anyway, the EMG 85/60A would be a great combo or the Rio Grande BBQ/Texas, Duncan JB/Jazz, Custom or over wound C-5(for more mids)/59, or PRS DragonsDragon IIs.

Re: METAL ONLY! JB or distortion or 81

hmmm, maybe its just me then. Seems like every guitar I've ever heard an EMG 81 in sounds exactly the same regardless of quality or wood or type of guitar used. Not alot of warmth or character happening.

Re: METAL ONLY! JB or distortion or 81

EMGs tend to impart more of the compressed feel nature of their personality into the guitars they are in compared to other pickups, but I would hardly say that all guitars with EMGs sound the same, that just isn't true.

JB's impart just as much of their overall personality as EMGs it's just that it's in the form of EQ rather than compression IMO.

Re: METAL ONLY! JB or distortion or 81

Sorry to go a bit off topic here but what are some of the differences between the Distortion and Demon?? I know the DD is a much hotter pickup.

and can the Demon provide a better Chunk/Chug and thickness then the Duncan Custom?

Any info would help?

Thanks,
Duke

of these three which is just simply the best for playin metal?
bands like metallica(older stuff of course!), and the like?

why do you say 'older stuff' , they STILL use 81s as far as i know.

yes, but their new stuff sucks donkey balls.

what i find in EMG's is that they have their own forced sound because they are so high output buckers. they get their meaning across with brute force, where passives ten to let the wood do the talking more often than not.

just depends on what you like basically
