Picture it … Sicily, I mean Atlanta, 2019.

You are an amateur metal guitar player with no pro aspirations or delusions of grandeur. Music is your hobby, not your livelihood.

You have roughly $1000 USD (give or take a bit) to spend on a guitar that will be tuned to E flat standard, and playing mostly metal, specifically thrash. A ton of Megadeth, Testament, and Slayer, some Judas Priest, Death Angel, Exodus, and Pantera, a bit of Load-era Metallica, a bit of Black Sabbath. You get the picture. Maybe once in a while you’ll do some Stevie Ray licks, so you can feel versatile, but for the most part, this will be a metal axe through and through.

You want 24 frets, for soloing purposes.

You do not want X, V, lightning bolt, or any other offset medieval instrument shape, because you prefer classic styles — Strat, Les Paul, maaaybe SG, in that ballpark. You do not want any loud colors or weird patterns, for the same reasons.

You are emphatically not a guy who scoops his mids or cranks the gain to insane levels. You like to have just enough gain to do the job, but not a whit more.

You are scale-agnostic. In other words, you don’t care if the axe is Fender, Gibson, or PRS scale.

Your primary amp is a Boss Katana 50. You’ve got an MRX Fullbore distortion pedal, and a Boss noise gate, and that’s about it. You have no plans to acquire more amps or pedals at the moment.

You plan on using hybrid .10/.52 D’Addario strings on the axe.

You are resolutely a six-string player. No seven- or eight-string guitars for you.

You are a passive pickup player. No EMGs welcome.

You want a fixed bridge. No trem system welcome.

You have no interest in acquiring used guitars from whatever year or era. You want to buy new, and that’s that.

Which guitar, of the ones listed, do you choose? If you select Other, give me some good reasons, as Tracy Chapman said, and I’ll turn right back around.

EDIT: Disregard the Ibanez poll option, as I have been correctly reminded that this particular model is well out of the $1000 USD price range.

Does everyone speak in the second person in Atlanta?

I say get a Black Epiphone Les Paul Standard and go for the old tried and true Mayhem set.

But seriously, don't be afraid to go used. You will find oodles of like-new gear without having to pay as much.

Are you that thrown off by the second-person pronoun? ;)

Ah, thanks for the rec. I actually already have an Epi LP Standard, with Black Winters, that I'm using as a jack-of-all-trades guitar in E standard. So I'm not keen to buy another Epi.

I think part of my issue is not knowing where to buy reliable used products. I'm scared of being screwed by a bad used deal. If you have suggestions for trusted online places to buy used, I'll listen.

Re: E flat metal axe poll

I don't understand the idea of needing different guitars dedicated to different whatever. My PRS has a floating bridge, so it tends to stay in a given tuning for awhile, but in maybe 15 minutes, I can go from Drop C to standard or whatever. If your Les Paul has a typical Les Paul setup, you should be able to get it to Eb in way less time than that.

For the record, I'm not putting down the idea of buying another guitar. I'd go used, and get a Schecter C-1 for WAAAAY under your budget. I'd also consider PRS SE guitars in your search. My Custom 24 is killer.

Re: E flat metal axe poll

Three months ago I got a Schecter Jake Pitt (EMGs) and a Banshee Passive (Nazgul/ Sentient) in like-new condition for well under 500 bucks each, from private sellers.

The neck joint of the Banshee especially, outperform Ibanez's AANJ. And the set-in of the C1 model feels like a neck-thru.

Reverb is a good place to go for used gear, there are a large number of reputable sellers there, and even if you do have any problems (which isn't often), they are pretty good about fixing any issues on either side of the deal.

And for what it's worth, if you know what you are looking for, you can buy some decent used gear on the GC website. I once found a MIM Standard Strat for $290 used that was being sold for cheap because the previous user modified it. The modification? A Dave Murray loaded pickguard that I later sold for $290. I then put in my own pickguard with a few single coils I had left over from other projects and in the end I got a guitar that goes for $700 for free.

The important part isn't where you go to find the used gear, but just keeping your eyes open. If you ever feel like you might be getting scammed, just send some screenshots to us over here and we will try and help you confirm or deny your suspicions.

Re: E flat metal axe poll

I would go with the ec-1000 with Duncans. I think Petersen and Skolnick used them one time in Testament. But basically your choice is between super Strat or super Les Paul. Go with the body shape you're comfortable with.

edit. I think Petersen had Emgs and Skolnick had Duncans.

Re: E flat metal axe poll

EC-1000, because it *should* be pretty versatile depending on what pickups you use.

Re: E flat metal axe poll

Sorry I noticed the Ibanez price thing after clicking on the Prestige.

Anyway, I'd still recommend an Ibanez, just around $700. The Iron Label series are nasty for the price, I think for metal they are the most refined in the price range.

Re: E flat metal axe poll

Is the Silverburst LTD Alex Skolnick reduced over there?
My choice would be that or the EC-1000 w/ Duncans.

Yeah, I've been eyeing the EC-1000 Duncan pretty hard. JB/'59 is pretty versatile, I would think. Peterson is now a Dean guy, but I'm not super-interested in trying to replicate who used what.

Re: E flat metal axe poll

Can I throw the Charvel San Dimas Pro Mod hardtail in the mix too?
Another JB/59 guitar, no-load tone pot, splits, great neck.
Not sure what the $-price is.

Re: E flat metal axe poll

The Schecter Solo II Custom is worth looking at too, I have one, a little more LP-ish than the EC-1000 (thicker body) but still has a thinner neck than an LP.

Yeah, I'm definitely giving it consideration. From the specs, it's a single-cutaway with a Fender scale, which is something I don't see too often in my guitar brands of choice. Looks fab. Do you have the one with the Brimstone pickups? If so, how do you find those pickups?
