Re: METAL ONLY! JB or distortion or 81

It was said before, but i personaly dont like emg's because u can put them in a 300 dollar guitar and a $1k and they will both sound pretty much the same. i use a tb4, and a dimebucker, the tb4 sounds better in my oppinion. although ive never used a dd or a x2n ive heard good things from them and a crunchy sound can be made with the right amp and or pedal. i probably repeated what everyone else said lol

any high output pup will do metal just fine
but i guess it is the little nuances that make us choose one other another?
the 81 is great but is definitely a one trick pony.
i had all my guitars loaded with them at one point and said to my self WHY??
then i found that the duncan distortion(misleading name) gives me a 81 type tone and tightness but does a whole hell of a lot more then just metal.:beerchug:

Re: METAL ONLY! JB or distortion or 81

Each one could probably do it but i personally would recommend the DD

Re: METAL ONLY! JB or distortion or 81

EMG's all soudn the same, its true. I wouldnt suggest the JB because its more of a rock pup vs. a metal pup IMO. I have a DD in my Schecter and I love my tone like theres no tomarrow. DD rocks my socks dude, get one, you will love it!

Re: METAL ONLY! JB or distortion or 81

Metal Only = Invader. Case Closed, end of story, thank you come again.

of these three which is just simply the best for playin metal?
bands like black label society, ozzy with zakk, slayer, pantera, metallica(older stuff of course!), symphony X and the like?
cleans are not a issue just sheer power, clarity, and maximum impact

It depends on who you want to sound like. Pantera uses the Dimebucker, Metallica use EMG active pickups (see ESP guitars website). Dave Mustain (Megadeth) uses the Jazz/JB combo. The Duncan Distortion is meant for distortion (hence the name). I bet there are plenty of other players that use various effects and pickups, so pick one and go with it. Me, I'd pick either the Jazz/JB combo or the Duncan Distortion with some other pickup. By the way, ESP uses some SD pickups on some of their models, like the '59/JB combo, which I'm going to go with (but I'm picking for versatility, not for Metal, per se).

Re: METAL ONLY! JB or distortion or 81

If you play Rhytm;

EMg 85 or Duncan Custom in bridge ( Emg60 or Pearly gates neck)

If you play lead ;

Emg 81 or Duncan Jb in bridge (Emg 85 or Jazz neck)

I have both Duncans and Emgs and I find Duncans more natural.. Emgs are recording pups for me..

Re: METAL ONLY! JB or distortion or 81

I thought James always used an ESP Explorer ? ? ?
I fell in love with the explorer and always wanted a white one, just like james. . . . I thought it was a gibson, but since I started paying attention, all I have seen is an esp explorer what gives????

Re: METAL ONLY! JB or distortion or 81

I have been around this block a million times and I always end up coming back to the plain 'ol Duncan 59B. Yeah, its great to have a hot pickup, but you lose thickness with hotter winds. JB's are okay, I never kept one in a guitar for any length of time. The Distortion is a great pickup too for its own tone, but I generally prefer the 59 or a Duncan Custom. Right now I have 4 59 equipped Jacksons and One APH1 equipped Jackson with old school Gresco Very-tone circuit. I am pretty satisfied. But again, tone is all subjective.

EMG-81

btw, wood is not as big a deal as some people would like us to believe when it comes to tone. Does it influence tone? Sure, but is it the be all end all?
NO!!! The magic of a guitar's tone lies more in the hands of the person and/or
the machines that make the guitar.
If someone made a recording with a guitar with a multi-ply body and a pair of
Seth Lovers and another recording with a Gibson Les Paul standard with Seths, I'm pretty sure most of us would have a hard time telling one from the other.

all the info you could possibly want is here http://www.montyjay.com/jamesguitars.html

but in short, he started out with a flying v knockoff (kill em all - ride the lightning) then a gibson explorer (RTL - justice), then the ESP endorsement kicked in (justice - today). hes been using a lot more varying stuff these days though

an alternative opinion: if you have a good amp + EQ pedal, even other 'polite' models like the A2P/ '59 can pull off a metal tone...

+1. I have a demon and its MEAN.

Re: METAL ONLY! JB or distortion or 81

You forgot the Dimarzio Air Zone and Tone Zone - though the 81 will do you fine. I think the Duncan Distortion should work as well but they are kinda comrpessed. I do like the Dimarzio Evo as well. Anyone tried the Bare Knuckles?

Re: METAL ONLY! JB or distortion or 81

Im gonna have to say 81... IMO its not sterile its fine... EMG practically can only make metal pups... despite a few of there pups.

Go for the 81... fantastic.

(I love these threads hehe)

Wood does definetly not influence the 81... it doesnt really matter what wood you have with some EMGs does it???

The wood does affect it; just not quite as much as it might affect the tone of passive's.

Re: METAL ONLY! JB or distortion or 81

Children of Bodom,
Wood does influence tone but what I find annoying is the fact that everybody makes a big stink over wood. Wood this, wood that, If I use this wood will it sound like my heroes guitar blah, blah, blah. Wood influences sustain more than anything else. The electronics and type of bridge influence tone even more. Will an all maple guitar sound brighter than an all mahogany one, not always. If you have a steel fixed bridge on mahogany it might actually sound brighter than a maple guitar with a softer metal fixed bridge.
Deadskinslayer3 has it right, EMG's might not show as much wood tone
as passives but then again IMO most of the tone is influenced by the pick-ups and bridge anyway so who cares? not me anyway.
How many times has one of us heard an ungodly guitar tone only to find out the guitar used was a piece of sh1t SQUIRE with good aftermarket
pick-ups.......My point exactly. :fing25:
