A lot of grill manufacturers say no but theoretically it does. Ideally, there should be no grill at all, but that would not be practical. You need to protect the speakers from hostile flying or piercing objects. However, sound tends to go around small round rod like objects pretty well, especially at lower frequencies. That suggest steel grills with round wires and large holes will probably work well. Any type of cloth will absorb some sound while flat steel surfaces will reflect the sound.
